Cpher and I travelled to Ovid-Elsie for the end of the spring season tournament. We were the 5th seed due to the two losses last week; didn’t really matter, we ended up playing the 4th seed in the first round.
Game 1: Beat Dewitt 43-38. A first for Cpher in this game; he fouled out with 38 seconds to go. Don’t really have an issue with any of his fouls…..most were against guards coming into the middle after losing their guy on defense. Oh well. Had 1 point, a free throw, but, I don’t remember a lot more about this game.
Game 2: Lost to Ovid-Elsie 50-18. Our other big kid hurt his knee about 50 seconds into this game (which started right after the first one) and Cpher played a lot of minutes because of that. Always kept hustling and ended up with 5 points…..including our only 2 points of the second half. Ugly ugly ugly ugly……
This dropped us into the loser’s bracket and we played again on Sunday….
Game 3: Played Portland and won 47-42. Might have been Cpher’s best game of the year…had a steal that led to him being fouled and going to the free throw line. Ended up there twice during this game, made 3 of 4 shots (one was in the final minute when they were fouling us to try and come back….a big free throw to make!) Scored twice as well. He also had these long 3/4 of the court passes that led, surprisingly, to easy buckets. Cpher would rebound the ball and was pressured immediately by the other team. Our guards are supposed to come back and get the ball from him, and Cpher knows to get the ball to the guards as soon as he can. But the first time he had to throw the ball upcourt, nobody stayed back, and two kids were pressuring him, and he finally, with his back completely turned to his teammates, just heaved the ball upcourt. And luckily, we got it, and scored easily. I think his other two passes were more thought out, but, they weren’t things of beauty…..
(the team….received sportsmanship medals after the last game)
Game 4: Lost 56-26 to East Lansing. Ugly ugly ugly ugly….they made five 3-pointers in the first quarter…that was the end of that.
