The story of the morning is getting from Kauai to Maui; leave the hotel at 7:30, flight leaves at 9:45, get to Maui around 10:30 and in the rental car and heading away from the airport by 11 am.
The first stop, like always, is at Costco. A cheap and easy lunch of hot dogs and pizza and a place to pick up decently priced essentials (here that means another umbrella and beach chair).
We can’t check in until 4 pm, so, what to do is a bit of a dilemma. Suzanne had suggested leaving Kahului and heading west, counter-clockwise around the island to our hotel. A little bit of research about this road dissuades me (and us) from this course….we’ve done the road to Hana, and unpaved and narrow roads aren’t enough to scare us off. But, the road to Hana and all the way around was clockwise…we were always away from the edge….this road wouldn’t be, and looks to have more narrow spots that didn’t seem to make sense with the rental mini-van.
In Kauai we had a mid-size SUV; here it’s a welcome step-up to the mini-van…..the discord of the boys in the backseat of the smaller car was getting hard to deal with.
We ended up going west along the north shore but I said we would go no further than where the state highway ends. We stopped at Waihee Beach Park….and totally unplanned that turned out really well….
It is always good when there is a tree for boys to climb….
the view was great….

IT IS ALWAYS GOOD WHEN THERE IS A TREE!!!
This park had a lot of lawn-open-spaces, so, Matthew got his frisbee out and had some fun with it…
There was a nice lookout as we continued up the road to the west…I think another mile and we hit the end of the state highway….and that was enough for me.
The boys, by the way, seem to permanently scarred by the windy roads and clutchy experience of Mallorca, so, anytime we end up on windy roads with lots of switchbacks, the conversation inevitably turns to Mallorca memories…
Made it to the resort, got checked in, and decided to spend the rest of the afternoon before dinner at the beach. This teenager is certainly listening to some progressive rock from the seventies while he works on his tan.
But mostly a quiet night. A great trip to Maui Tacos for Mom and Dad, and a quiet and early night after a few early mornings in a row (and a real early morning coming up next!)
