Kevin: Auditions for the musical were this week; he did not get called back for any of the leads. Seems destined for a role as a generic fairy-tale creature. He’s not thrilled with this ending of his ‘musical’ career, but, that is the way it is. I’m just grouchy enough to fully believe that the cast for this musical was set in the director’s head 9 months ago when it was announced.
Cpher: Off at 7th grade camp this week up at Spring Hill. Hope he is having fun; more on this later I guess. Find it more than a little amusing that when asked to pick his 3 friends that he would like to be in a cabin with that none of those boys I’ve ever met….which is quite a feat given the number of sports he is in. Better said I guess….he doesn’t hang out with anyone that he plays sports with.
Had two basketball games last weekend, Mom and Cpher battled the elements to get to St. Johns for the double-header. I’ll rant here about SJ a bit; that school district was out of school all last week due to the snow on Monday and Tuesday and the drifting the rest of the week…..so of course, we’re thinking they will cancel the games on Saturday because there is between 4 to 8 inches of snow forecast for Saturday. But they don’t. There is a youth basketball coordinator in SJ that really needs to rethink priorities in life.
They lost both games…..our coach wasn’t there and things just seemed to come off the rails. I wasn’t there, so don’t have a lot to report here. Certainly means that we’ll be in the lower half of the gold bracket for the tournament; I look at this as good news….we can win the tournament instead of being eliminated almost first thing!
Matthew: At the same time as Cpher’s basketball games Matthew had two soccer games down in Wixom. Another perilous drive, this time in the other direction, but, the snow was changing to sleet the further south you went and so for most of the drive back we were on wet not snowy roads.
We shouldn't have even bothered with the drive since many of the kids decided they didn't want to play. What an ugly two games….I figured we would win both! Stupid me.
Game 1: Against the team we beat 7-0 earlier this year. Coach, as promised, moved Matthew out of center back (ok, some kids were late arriving, so Matthew played the first 10 minutes back there). This turns out to be a disaster since we give up 2 goals right down the middle through the 'B' team kid that the coach is trying at center back. The other team, LCSC, can only score one way, on breakaways, and we obligingly give them this opportunity too many times. They outhustle us to every ball....
Game 2: We have an hour between games. After that debacle, and before the next game, a lot of talking to the kids by the coach. And none of it works, VardarSouth outhustles us to every ball as well. And this game, for the first time all year, I would say that the goalie has an absolutely dreadful game. VS has a free kick, it bounces right in front of our goalie, he spills, they put it in. 2nd goal, Matthew is tracking back and is clearly going to push the ball wide away from the goal, the goalie yells "Mine!" and then yells "Yours". So, Matthew, hearing Mine, slows down, and then it's too late, the goalie doesn't come, the VS kid, who didn't slow down, keeps coming, 2-0. Spills another free kick right off of his hands for goal number 3. We control the ball for long stretches of time but for some reason decide not to press forward and try and score goals. Very frustrating.
Matthew is back at center back again for the whole game.....still missing the starting CB so I guess this is the way it will be for rest of Session 2. Hope we can get our heads out of our arse's for the next doubleheader in 3 weeks.
Skiing/Snowboarding: Since Matthew isn’t doing basketball we said we’d try and make more of an effort to get to the slopes. The first chance Kevin wasn’t around, and Matthew didn’t want to go without him. The second attempt was Sunday.
(Kevin is the skiing guy we remember…no issues at all. Matthew says he fell down a few times getting used to what was going on again)
(I brought the Gopro to try it out and after having it in the charger Saturday night it has no charge when we get there Sunday/! Aaargh…back to the drawing board!)
(We were going to go down again on Wednesday if the snow gods granted another snow day, but, alas, it was not to be)
(My favorite picture of the bunch)
