Tennis – CAAC Gold Cup

First, two pictures from the league championship a week back….

Serious Picture.  You can see Kevin and some of the others holding something very small in front of them; that’s the league championship medal.

That’s the goofy picture….

Saturday was the CAAC Gold Cup; they’ve done this with the soccer teams the last five or six years and now are moving it out to other sports (tennis and volleyball this year).  There are three divisions of schools around there in the Capital Area Athletics Conference, sorted by enrollment.  We are in Blue, there is Red and White I think.  The Gold Cup takes the top eight teams in the three conferences and has them play against each other.  So, another eight team draw…..

We’re not sure if they did any kind of seeding for this tournament; all of the Okemos teams didn’t have the 1 or 2 seeds you might expect but I can understand that….if you go strictly by record some of the players on these other teams are going to have better records because we’ve played harder teams and haven’t been consistent on lineups.

Kevin and Ross start the morning against Dewitt; some miscommunication (or misunderstanding) on our parts has Dad only arriving to watch midway through the match; they win 6-0, 6-1 and it’s not very close.

Match 2 both Mom and Dad are able to attend; we’re going to try and be around for more of regionals and states in the next two weeks but it is tough with his schedule.  They play Holt and win 6-3, 6-0…..got a little sketchy in the middle of the first set but they routed them in the second set.

Match 3 is the finals; against Haslett.  Mom makes it over for the last three games of the second set (Cpher had a football game at the same time…I ‘nudged’ Mom to head out at halftime to see what she could see…not much was going to change that football game at that point) as Ross and Kevin win 6-2, 6-0.  So they are CAAC Gold Cup, or CAAC Showcase, or whatever they are calling it, champions.

Drama (drama?) during the match….cheering in tennis isn’t like cheering in any other sport around here.  Mostly quiet, a few ‘good jobs’ and all of the cheering should be after the point is over.  Haslett, or at least these Haslett parents, seem not to have gotten that memo….they are cheering during points, cheering loudly as Ross double faulted (so Haslett didn’t do anything good, just we made an error) and as Kevin put it “cheering like it was soccer”….

One point is why I’m typing this all out….from what Kevin said Ross hit a really hard shot and Haslett did a great job to return it and one parent started cheering and clapping……as Kevin ran from across the court and got it, and returned it, and Kevin and Ross went on to win the point, and game.  Kevin went over to that parent at the break and asked him to only cheer at the end of points…….and that’s what happened after that.

(it was cold around here today, 40’s and windy…shudder to think what the weather could be like for regionals Thursday and States in two weeks)

(the blurb in the paper….complete with mis-typing.  I guess it’s Gold Showcase for the title…)

New Picture (2)

(the much more informative draw and results from yesterday.  Corrected the spelling here…but is it Showcase Gold?)

New Picture (3)

(or Gold Showcase)

Regionals on Thursday….weather forecast looks surprisingly decent…
