Euro2012 – Day Thirteen – Sea Day #3

The last all sea day, a stop in Mallorca, and then off the boat in Barcelona.

2012-06-25-Breeze01

A shot from the balcony….am a huge fan of this cove balcony now; it’s cheaper than a regular balcony but it’s the only balcony-type on the ship where you can hear the waves….just awfully nice.  A big fan of the Mediterranean Sea too…hardly any wave action and many days it’s just been almost like glass….

2012-06-25-Breeze02

Matthew’s favorite spot on the ship; on request pizza.  You can see the Tandoori grill over on the starboard side.  On the dream, they made large pizzas and served up slices; here, it’s made to order small pieces, so, it’s always a bit of a wait for some pizza.  Think they need to do both…..

2012-06-25-Breeze03

Suzanne’s art purchase (that’s not fair, I knew she was going to to do it, so, our art purchase).  But I completely forget the artist’s name now….and we have no idea where we are going to put it!

2012-06-25-Breeze04

On the way to Mallorca.  We are going to the big island, take note of the northernmost point…..

Breezy Thoughts:

  • Dinner?  We bailed on elegant night (again) and hung out with the boys.  Played mini-golf, swam in the pool (salt water and pretty cold!) and sat in the hot tub.
  • Boys all day?  Camp Carnival with Fric-ette, Matthew got to do some soccer stuff up on the sports deck (we went for one event last sea day and they said no kids, just over 18….not real thrilled by that).
  • Went to the comedy club again; this time was better than the first time….he was pretty funny.

Euro2012 – Day Twelve – Sicily

Only two ports left….hard to believe this is coming to and end.  It is still hot and humid though.

2012-06-24-Sicily01

Sailing in to Messina…Mount Etna in the distance…

2012-06-24-Sicily02

I don’t know what this statue is, but, it’s big and it’s in the harbor.  Will have to wiki later…

2012-06-24-Sicily03

Blurry trees but Mt. Etna smoking in the distance as we ride the bus to get there…picture taken with Iphone set up against the glass…

2012-06-24-Sicily04Cpher

Both Fric and Frac were zonked out for the trip to the volcano…

2012-06-24-Sicily05LavaFlow

The lava flow that I think I heard came from an eruption in the 1930’s….could hardly hear the tour guide…

2012-06-24-Sicily06Pano

The first pano of the day.  Definitely think the Italians could bring some prisoners up here to pick up trash; it is everywhere!

2012-06-24-Sicily07

Boys climbed up a hill to get this picture…

2012-06-24-Sicily08

They climbed this hill; I got about halfway up before my stupid decision of the day, wore Keen’s instead of tennis shoes, caught up with me and the constant introduction of igneous pebbles underneath my feet made it damned near impossible to go any further…

2012-06-24-Sicily09Cpher

Cpher on the crater….

2012-06-24-Sicily10

This pano didn’t come out so well near the road…may have to consider going back and trimming out the wall and just leaving the top portion…

2012-06-24-Sicily11

Looking out away from the volcano

2012-06-24-Sicily12

The second portion of the trip was a stop at Taormina; the main attraction here is the Greek theatre…but the town was cute as we walked through…

2012-06-24-Sicily13

2012-06-24-Sicily14

Another good pano…

2012-06-24-Sicily17

2012-06-24-Sicily18

The Greek theatre was really cool BUT we came at the wrong time…because…

2012-06-24-Sicily19

They are holding the Taormina Film Festival….so there’s this huge stage that covers up a lot of the theatre…

2012-06-24-Sicily20

2012-06-24-Sicily21

This view (and panorama) was worth coming all the way up to the top of the Greek Theatre…

2012-06-24-Sicily22

Fric.  Frac.

2012-06-24-Sicily24

2012-06-24-Sicily25

We drove back to Messina to end the day; took this panorama of the port

2012-06-24-Sicily26

And the Breeze…

2012-06-24-Sicily27

Stopped by this church and then walked down, got some cannoli; and walked back to the ship.

Breezy Nights

  • Dinner was turkey for Dad, more shrimp for Cpher, and filet mignon and braised short rib for Matthew and Mom.
  • Matthew and I went up to the seaside theatre to watch England vs Italy.

2012-06-24-Breeze01

Need two pictures here…one focused on the screen so that you can see it.  Pretty good clarity for such a big screen…

2012-06-24-Breeze02

One picture for the atmosphere….Mom and Cpher stopped by and watched most of the extra time and penalty kicks with us…

2012-06-24-Breeze03

Leaving Sicily…..the ships used to stop or cruise by Stormboli (which has a volcano that is exploding) but the Italian Coast Guard has said the ships can’t get so close anymore, so, you can see we didn’t go that way…

Euro2012 – Day Eleven – Sea Day #2

On Sea Day #1 Matthew slept until almost noon.  Not so today…

2012-06-23-Breeze01Note

There’s Fric.  There’s Frac.  And on this cruise there is Fric-ette…who knocked on the door at 8:30 and bolted but left behind this note requesting that two boys get their butts out of bed.  They did get up and go; that’s a pretty good feat since they were up ‘til 3 am doing the Camp Carnival all-night-long thing….

2012-06-23-Breeze02Art

Suzanne and I went to the art auction; disappointing since they didn’t put the two or three pictures we were interested in up on the block; so, walked out looking at it as 2 hours of wasted time…

2012-06-23-Breeze03BlueIguana

Looking forward at the Blue Iguana Bar….you can see the guy singing over near the windows…

2012-06-23-Breeze04GameShow

We went back to the third edition of the Hasbro Game Show….still not chosen to get up on stage but enjoyed the show….

2012-06-23-Breeze05Atrium

Picture #1 of the atrium

Picture #2 of the atrium

2012-06-23-Breeze07MonkeyPlease

Fric and Fricette hung out all day today; I think they attended the towel folding demo and Cpher ended up getting the book….and making a request…

2012-06-23-Breeze08Monkey

Which was provided during the evening service…

2012-06-23-Breeze09SpainFrance

Matthew and I hung out near the casino and watched France –vs- Spain….good game.  These gentlemen in front of us turned out to be rooting for France…they left unhappy.

2012-06-23-Breeze10Location

Hey, I remembered to take a picture!

Euro2012 – Day Ten - Venice

Italian Fail?  We are 12 hours out of Venice and we get the announcement….the public transit workers are on a 24-hour strike on Friday to protest the austerity measures because the Italian economy sucks.

Any other port in Italy and this wouldn’t have been an issue for us; here, in Venice, you either vaparetto or walk.  Carnival, I think, did a great job and reserved five private vaparetto’s to transport guests from the boat to St. Mark’s Square.  But, the strike really hosed our plans, which included some time in Venice but then a quick hop over to some of the other islands….

2012-06-22-Venice01ProjectMoses

The infrastructure for Project Moses….something I really need to Wiki when I get home…..

2012-06-22-Venice02e

Unlike other ports, today is a late hop off the ship, 10 am.  That means we get a really sweet view of Venice as the Breeze pulls in…..

2012-06-22-Venice03

Part of this sweet view are these huge yachts….ah, the good life!

2012-06-22-Venice04

2012-06-22-Venice05

2012-06-22-Venice06

The first picture of St. Mark’s Square…..really annoying that they have ads on the scaffolding while doing renovations…

2012-06-22-Venice11

More yacht envy…..

2012-06-22-Venice12

The Breeze, from the top deck of the vaparetto.  As always, we are in the first hundred people off the boat..

2012-06-22-Venice13

Might be the best picture of Cpher that I’ve taken this trip so far….

2012-06-22-Venice14

2012-06-22-Venice15

You can see our cabin here….there’s the first row of windows on the bottom (deck 1); we are on deck two and are the first balcony you see on the left, two to the left from that gap between the balconies…

2012-06-22-Venice16

So, our first impression of Venice is the cruise in and the cruise back to St. Mark’s.  This is the other side…

2012-06-22-Venice17

This picture confuses me….the order makes me think it’s taken on the vaparetto back…but, the perspective seems too high, like Carnival Breeze perspective high.  May be just a 2 picture pano…

2012-06-22-Venice18Pano

A more traditional pano shot…

2012-06-22-Venice19

2012-06-22-Venice20

2012-06-22-Venice21

2012-06-22-Venice22CityMaps2Go

I must stop here and sing the praises of the CityMaps2Go app….you can download fully scalable maps and then be offline while you track your movements in each city (maps, and loading of maps, take up a lot of data and a lot of battery life).  This app was a godsend in Florence and got a workout here today…

2012-06-22-Venice23

2012-06-22-Venice24

The leaning tower of Venice?

2012-06-22-Venice25

Just some really pretty flowers and buildings along the canals…

2012-06-22-Venice26

The bell tower peaking out behind the Basilica….messed up here, should have gone into the church when we had the chance and by the time we got back to the square later in the day it was closed….

2012-06-22-Venice27

Probably should have climbed this with the boys, but, did not.

2012-06-22-Venice28

2012-06-22-Venice29

2012-06-22-Venice30

The first picture inside the Doge’s Palace; we had reserved a tour of the secret itineraries …

2012-06-22-Venice31

2012-06-22-Venice32

The tour guide, who did a GREAT job.  Will need to Wiki when I get home just to double check the stories about Casanova.  This is the face that also served as a mailbox where you could turn in letters accusing others of misdeeds…

2012-06-22-Venice33

2012-06-22-Venice34

Hercules and Atlas….

2012-06-22-Venice35GoldenStaircase

The golden staircase…

2012-06-22-Venice36GoldenStaircase

A better picture.  The floor down there is really hard to see, but, love the 3-D illusion on that floor and on the middle landing of the stairs…

2012-06-22-Venice37

A view out the window on the 3rd floor; nothing real special about it.

In a small world note, as we were doing the tour we met a family from Ohio, said we were from Michigan near Lansing, and they said their family was from Okemos….we didn’t know them but knew some mutual friends.

2012-06-22-Venice38

Rialto Bridge…

2012-06-22-Venice41

2012-06-22-Venice42

View from the bridge

2012-06-22-Venice43

We walked back from Rialto Bridge to St. Mark’s….wandered back actually, made an attempt to go a different way and certainly didn’t go direct.  And wandered by all of this cool architecture…

2012-06-22-Venice44

2012-06-22-Venice45

Iphone died around 5 pm so will have to add pictures from the gondola ride in a post that covers the pictures that Suzanne took….

One of the downsides of no vaparetto excursion is that there was a lot more walking…and around 8 pm that was about it for the boys…headed back to the ship.

2012-06-22-Venice46

The cruise into Venice we stood up on the higher decks on the other side of the ship; leaving, we could sit on our balcony.  This is the best of my photos; not sure if Suzanne got anything better or not yet.

Forgot the picture at the end of the night.  But it’s pretty simple, a few miles south of Venice in the Adriatic Sea, heading south.
