Privacy

Blogger doesn’t let you make certain posts ‘private’; only the whole blog.  Don’t think I want to make the whole blog private.  I do know that I want to blog about certain subjects that probably shouldn’t be blogged about where everyone in the world can see it

So, for now, there is a new blog where those type of posts (and only those posts) will go.  The first one is up…..and I’ll always put links here when I post over there.  The title of the post is ‘Dating’…

I believe you will have to create an account at livejournal and then send a friend request to me for me to grant you access to the blog….if you want it.

A busy busy Sports Saturday

Left the house at 8 am Saturday morning; didn’t get home until 11 pm. Not all of that was sports, but, a lot of it was.

Christopher: Had his third football game, lost 16-14 to Holt. Last week our coach sent out an email after the rain-shortened game saying the loss was his fault….and I didn’t understand that, the game conditions were screwed up, everyone made the best of it, whatever. This time, though, it was clearly his fault….I was on the phone with Suzanne as we blew this game and was simply disgusted with how we lost (after literally marching up and down the field most of the second half).

It’s 14-8 Good Guys; fourth quarter, there’s 10 seconds on the clock, the ball is at the Holt 45 yard line. You would think we would be in some kind of prevent defense…but, no, same type of base defense and our safeties are not deep at all. Holt (surprise!) goes to throw a pass, our cornerback gets caught watching the backfield (why???), our safeties are nowhere to be found, the wide receiver is 5 yards behind the corner back when he catches the ball (and that’s a neat trick…kids can’t throw it that far at this age!) and 55 yards later it’s a touchdown. Holt kicks the extra point (if you kick at this age, you get 2 points if you are successful) and that’s that.

Christopher played well, I think. It’s hard to tell when he’s on the line. The line coach thought he played well, and when he limped off the field late in the fourth quarter everyone was happy that he was able to go back in because he had been doing such a good job. Still not quite there mentally, was again out on on the field with the starting defense when he shouldn’t have been.

I uploaded all of the video for the game at a site for the team…if you want to see Christopher in action I’d go for the offensive titled videos and he’s at tackle almost all of the time. He did not play much on defense and I need to go back and look at the video myself to see when he played there and how he did….

Kevin: The JV team was also in Holt for the Holt Invite….it rained a little in the morning and that held up the schedule and then half of the kids had to head over to Kiwanis Park for their matches.

2010-09-KevinTennis07 2010-09-KevinTennis01 2010-09-KevinTennis02

The best part of that was that it meant that Kevin and Christopher were right next to each other in the morning and we got to see Kevin before heading over to the football game. Kevin played #3 singles again and his first match was a pro-set (to 8) against a kid from Portland. When we watched, Kevin did not look good; Suzanne speculates that Kevin sees me watching and completely falls apart….Kevin denies this. The kid from Portland is pretty good, and Kevin finds himself down 4-1 before coming back to make it 4-3 before we have to leave to head over for the football game.

2010-09-KevinTennis052010-09-KevinTennis06

From the top of the stands (where I was taping for football) you could look over and see the courts….I could tell Kevin was still playing….and he was still playing…and he was still playing. This could only be a good sign that he was coming back and making the match longer. Finally got this text from him:

“I WON!!!!!!!!!!!!! 8-6!!!!!!! I broke him to win it at the very end at 40-0!!!!!!!! Yay!!!!!!!!”

The other matches were at the high school and we were going to miss them since we had to get Matthew to soccer. Got this text much later:

“Didn’t have to play second match, won final against Jackson 6-4 6-3. Medals provided for winner and runner-up. Will receive medal.”

2010-09-KevinTennis03

2010-09-KevinTennis04

I have asked Kevin if I bother him when I watch his matches (because I will tell him what I think he needs to work on….when we got home late tonight we were talking about how he wasn’t following through on his swing and everything was going high). He says it’s not a problem…Suzanne still thinks I jinx him…

Matthew: Matthew had two TNT games….the games are down in Bloomfield Hills today. Happily, they were later in the afternoon and Christopher was able to come with us; sadly, this means Kevin had to get a ride home from the tennis meet and spend most of the evening here with only the springer spaniels to keep him company.

Game One: Played the other team that hadn’t lost in our division to this point and beat them 7-1. Matthew had 2 of the first 3 goals (and the assist on the third of those three)….the video is here.

2010-09-MatthewTNT01

Forgot I had this picture of part of the team…

Game Two: This game was played immediately after the first one….didn’t think the boys were that tired but, maybe they were. We played a team that had been moved up to our division after crushing the competition in their division in previous games. We lost, 6-4. The first team we’ve played in a while that has been able to take advantage of our weaknesses (some of our kids are terribly shaky on defense; this team sent 4 kids forward and took advantage of it) and they jumped up 2-0 within a minute. We battled back to make it 4-3 at one point and again gave up two goals due to some poor defensive choices (at one point our defender kicked it right back to the middle in front of our goalie…he might as well have set it on a tee….) and that was that.

Matthew played ok….he started on defense and that’s never a strength for him (he’s not patient enough…he wants to steal the ball right away where he’d be better off just defending and waiting for a better opportunity later).

In the second half he was at midfield and was carrying the ball up and, while making a sweet pass to set up a breakaway, was the recipient of the nastiest foul I’ve seen in a quite a while. Matthew is writhing on the ground in pain and is helped off the field. He seemed ok, and came back out on the field later in the game but had a limp (that disappeared when he needed a burst of speed at times). After the game he showed us a nasty set of cleat marks on the back of his upper thigh….he still has the imprints there today….

Can’t wait to play this team again; thought we controlled the game but just couldn’t convert after gifting them a bunch of goals.

Since we were down in Bloomfield Hills we decided that we would travel the extra 20 minutes to Dave and Busters for dinner (Fric and Frac happy; Kevin? not-so-much).

Open Houses

Tonight was the last of the open houses / curriculum nights for the boys.  Figured I needed to get off of the sports and type about something else….

Kevin:  At the high school, C-night is 10 minutes in each class.  Not a lot of highlights here, but, did have fun hearing things in the class and asking Kevin if he knew about them.  For example:

D: “Kevin needs to get CD for geometry book to load on computer”

K:  “I did”

D:  “Oh.  Good.  Why r u bringing book home then”

K:  “Oh yeah.  Whoops”

D:  “Do u want to do Michigan math prize competition?”

K:  “No”

D:  “You will try geometry extra credit?”

K:  “?”

D:  “Did you do English extra credit?  Due tomorrow.”

K:  “There’s English extra credit?”

School goes well….we’re not stumbling out of the gate this year.  Which is good.

Kevin is thinking of asking someone to the Homecoming dance…..will have to decide how I want to handle this on the blog.  Might have to look and see if I can password protect certain posts….

Matthew:  Matthew’s class always get the shaft on these…we’ve just attended last year so it’s hard to get any enthusiasm up to go to it this year.  Same teacher, mostly the same curriculum (big change in reading/spelling though).  Arrived almost as it was ending and heard most of the Big Zoo Lesson talk.

p1239089864_16528

The third graders….

Christopher:  The big change in the reading/ spelling curriculum meant that we absolutely had to be at the 4th grade night to understand what the heck is going on.  Only one spelling lesson has come home and the words were a big step up from last year.  It’s been a challenge.

Received this email yesterday afternoon:

“Good evening,
While I’m thinking about it, I just wanted to share with you that I received two very nice compliments about Christopher this week. One was from a lunch/playground supervisor and the other was from our physical education teacher, Ms. Hough. Both gave examples of Christopher volunteering to do something to help them or another student without even being asked. He has had a great start to the school year! Hopefully, we’ll see you tonight.”

So, it seems like Christopher is off to a good start at school.  Fourth grade brings book reports, which will be a challenge.  Found out last night that they did some in-class reading the other day, and the teacher is very clear, if you are nervous at all and don’t want to do it she won’t call on you….and she was pleasantly surprised that Christopher had his hand up early and did a pretty good job at it.  I need to schedule a time to talk about where he’s at it with reading and spelling with her; hope to do that next week.

Game Set Match

A busy week of tennis; seems like the season grinds to a halt when the varsity begins the playoff process in two weeks though. I had thought the JV teams would still play each other a little but, apparently not.

Monday:  Kevin at #3 singles; got crushed by a kid from Jackson 6-2, 6-0.  Saw some of this match…the kid came to the front often, and Kevin couldn’t seem to not hit the ball back to the middle.  “Passing shots (down the line) are hard” he says, but, against a kid who is going to camp in the middle, they are really the only option.  I told him later I would have preferred he lose trying to do that as opposed to losing and not trying what was the correct strategy at all.

Tuesday:  Played #1 doubles; crushed two kids from Holt, 6-0, 6-1.  The first time he has played #1 doubles (“coach decided to mix things up”) with Reed (who has been on #1 doubles all year) and Kevin and Reed seemed to play really well together.  Reed is awesome at the front of the net and Kevin does well with ground strokes from the back.  Holt wasn’t very good and didn’t have much of a chance here.

Wednesday:  Back at #3 singles; crushed a kid @ Dewitt 6-2, 6-0.  Neither Suzanne or I could see any of this (we saw bits and pieces the last two days) since we were off with the boys for a soccer game, but, 6-2, 6-0 speaks for itself.

From the Sports Desk

I think it will be hard for a post on this blog not to be sports-related over the next two months.

Saturday:  Thunderstorms rolled through mid-Michigan all day long and they played havoc with the sports schedule.  Christopher’s 9 am start against Grand Ledge was delayed for about an hour as the first wave of lightning and thunder moved in.

When they did start, they made the decision to play using a running clock; no stoppages for incomplete pass, out of bounds, nothing.  The game went kind of wacky from that point on and the final (GL 6, Okemos 0) reflected nothing more than a wacky game without any continuity.

Christopher played well (I think)….almost exclusively as left tackle.  Started the game on the front of the kickoff return team and had the ball kicked directly to him!  Thankfully, he grabbed it and fell on it, and the game went on.  He did a good job of blocking but did not do such a great job of noticing the guy that would line up a few feet outside of him and rush by him while he blocked the guy in front of him.  The coaches did finally help clue him in to this (after picking our QB and RB up off the ground once or twice) and after that he either came out and got him, or, one time, took the guy in front of him and blocked him into that guy out there.

Coaches have mentioned Cpher would be a better player if he paid more attention in practice (at one point he was in the game when he shouldn’t have been….it was clearly his fault).  Need to work on this.

Matthew’s first TNT game of the weekend started at 12:30 pm; the team won 7-0 (I think).  Matthew had a goal that I have some crappy video of; I don’t think I’m going to save it (Dad was too busy watching, not doing enough moving of the camera to follow the ball and game).  We overmatched this team quite easily and Matthew spent the second half in goal, booming goal kicks and punts out of his end.

I hope (I hope) that his falling down while kicking problem has reached its zenith here…he fell down at least 8 times in the first half and we had a long talk about it after the game.  I think he understands that he’s shifting his weight back instead of forward and that’s what is forcing him onto his butt all of the time.

The OSC soccer game started at the same time as the arrival of the 2nd round of tstorms…game called off and will be rescheduled.

Sunday:  Another early morning (no sleeping in for Dad this weekend!)….Matthew and Dad head down to Livonia for the 2nd TNT game of the weekend….against the same team we played on Saturday.  Same result, an 8-0 blowout, but, all the kids on our team have scored a goal this season now.   Matthew played defense in the first half and had a sweet(!) goal where he carried the ball forward and blasted the ball in from at least 35+ feet out.

Only fell down once this game from having his weight wrong….and looked over at me with a “I’m sorry” look on his face.

Watched the first ten minutes of the Steelers game (which was eventful enough to tide me over for a while!) and then headed off with the boys to the OSC game that started at 2 pm.  We beat Haslett 3-0….almost all of the game was played in the Haslett end of the field and we missed on a lot (lot!) of opportunities.  I did move Christopher up out of defense for the last six minutes of the game and he punched in the third goal to close out the scoring.  Happy for the big guy that he got a goal…he doesn’t get many chances.

This week:  Kevin has tennis meets Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday….and a JV invitational on Saturday in Holt.  Christopher had a football game Saturday in Holt and an OSC game Wednesday.  Matthew has that same OSC game Wednesday and TNT games this coming weekend, 2 on Saturday and 1 on Sunday.

Whew!!!!

Tennis Update

Tuesday:  JV Meet @ East Lansing.  Kevin has successfully challenged and moved up to #3 singles, and this is his first match in that spot.  I got to see the last end of the first set and the 2nd set and the early parts of the 3rd.

Walked away more disgusted than anything else; not quite sure why he was going away from his good tennis form (that he’s been working on)…and then surprised to see him correct it later on.  When I ask him about this later I get an explanation that I won’t go into here but that I have told him I think is a bunch of baloney and no instructor would agree with.

His serve, at times, is very impressive.  But, in the end, he lost, 6-4, 2-6, 4-6.

Wednesday:  The #1 and #2 JV singles are moved up to varsity today, so, Kevin moved up to #1 singles for the trip to play the Haslett JV.  He played one super-set (to 8) and lost 8-6.  Don’t know much about this, didn’t see it, didn’t really talk with him about it, but, he did say that they were on serve until the very end.

TNT Games 1 and 2

Matthew’s regular season with the TNT U9s started Sunday 90 minutes away in Canton with two games in 4 hours.

Game 1:  A 7-3 win against Canton that wasn’t , or shouldn’t have been, that close.  We had some great goals on some sweet passes; we gave up some goals on some very suspect defense that I hope won’t happen much in the future.

Matthew had one goal; it is here.  The video is quick; not even 30 seconds I think…..

Game 2:  A 8-1 win against Bloomfield that again, wasn’t that close.  For the entire second half, the boys had to make sure everyone on the field touched the ball before they were allowed to try to score….our passes back to our goalie posed more of an offensive threat than what the other team was up to.  No scoring from Matthew here; he was on defense in the first half and the second half didn’t yield many opportunities.

Still seems to be falling down a lot….not sure what’s going on with that but hope he grows out of it soon….

Have to think that we’re going to be moved up in divisions if we keep walloping teams like this…

Zombies….

Saturday in San Diego was the zoo and Seaworld….and then a trip to the airport for the long flight home.

Nobody slept much on that redeye flight. Kevin was stubborn and didn’t even try….Matthew finally nodded off, Suzanne snoozed a little.  Across the way, Christopher fell asleep before the plane even took off, but, slept fitfully, waking up kind of yelling and crying once or twice during the flight.  I think I slept for about 45 minutes total.

We landed in Atlanta about 20 minutes early….and found out the flight to Flint would leave 30 minutes late, leaving us 3 hour and 30 minutes of a layover while everyone was half dead.

Some boys are little boys, and can sleep anywhere.

2010-09-MatthewSleep 2010-09-CpherSleep

Finally board the flight to Flint, this time I’m sitting with Kevin and Christopher…Matthew is off with Mom.  Kevin, who had told us that the way to beat jet lag was to stay up as long as you can, was asleep before the plane took off.  I know I was asleep for a lot of it.  Suzanne told me that she looked back at us at one point and Christopher and I were in the same pose, head back, mouth open, completely out.

Landed in Flint, drove home, arrived here about 1 pm.  Boys are completely recharged and out the door to play with friends.  Kevin goes to his basement cave and we don’t see him again until we wake him up around 6.  Mom and Dad take naps and Sunday is almost completely a waste of the day (I did get the yard mowed and the dogs back from the kennel…that’s about it though).

Wrapping Up the Vacation

Still have more than a few pictures to go through and more than a few stories to tell.  So, let’s see if I can knock some of this out while watching the Nittany Lions trying to hold off the ‘tide.

  2010-09-02-KevinTennis

I mentioned earlier that Kevin took some tennis lessons while on vacation….this is during one of them.

  2010-09-02-BoysWax01

Went up to Hollywood on Friday morning…figured Suzanne and I have never done a wax museum and the boys would enjoy it.  They did enjoy it, but, wouldn’t spent the money to do another one, anywhere.

Friday afternoon we drove back down to San Diego….it took a loooong time as we experienced SoCal traffic in full force (even with being a HOV-vehicle).  Saturday we decided to split up; Christopher went with me to the zoo and Suzanne and the other two went to Seaworld.  As you can see, Christopher made friends with a hippo….

But the highlight of this trip to the zoo for me was the capybara.  We’re walking through the redone elephant exhibit; it looks great, the elephants are out and moving around, the lion and lioness are off to one side and they are moving around and the crowds are swarmed around the viewing locations…and Christopher, as we are walking through and I’m wondering which side he’ll pick, goes, “Dad, look, there’s a capybara!” and runs off ahead to look at them.  I’m going “Wait, there’s elephants, there’s lions…” and when I catch up he starts telling me all about them, where they live, what they eat, how big they are, you name it, he knew it.  After the information flow comes to an end I ask him “How in the world do you know all this?” and the answer is simple, “I read a book at the library at school.”.

Lions, elephants, blah.  Who needs them when the capybara, world’s largest rodent (“The size of a dog, Dad!”) is around.

The road to the NFL begins here…..

or something like that.

Travelled up to St. Johns (previous spot of soccer and cross-country away games/meets) for Christopher’s first tackle football game and the debut of the 4th and 5th grade Chiefs.

In the end, it was a successful debut.  We won 21-8.  Christopher, when he was on the field, was on the offensive and defensive line and held his own.  Didn’t make much of a difference in the game and you could tell he was a little lost at times.  Did get whistled for offsides once on defense when he moved when the ref whistled to start the clock, not when the offense started.  Oh well.

  20100911_3

I asked Christopher what he like and disliked about the game and was surprised to hear that he liked being double-teamed.  He thought that was great; two guys trying to block him meant that one of his teammates had nobody on him!  He also thought it was better to let the double team just push and push and push him….we talked about just trying to hold your ground.

There is video of Christopher in action, I warn you though, that because he’s on the line it takes some doing to find him and follow him.  Christopher’s best play is the 3rd from last(?) and you really can’t see him at all on the line of scrimmage….but you can see him just knock the guy in front of him 5 yards off the ball as the play is coming to his side of the field.

So…what does a mean, tough, offensive and defensive lineman want as a ‘treat’ after a successful debut?

Final Waterproof Pictures, Part 2

Christopher wanted the camera as we went to the pool on what must have been Thursday afternoon.

Love the thumbs up!

2010-09-PoolBoys

This picture was what forced us to leave the pool; Christopher had been asking and asking Kevin and Matthew to get together to take on together, and the two consented for just this shot.  Christopher saw that Matthew was cut out, and wanted one more, the others didn’t want to sit there for it, he got mad, they got mad, Dad said that’s it, time to head back to the room.

Sports Update

Kevin:  Tennis goes well, goes better than well actually.  He had the chance to take three lessons out west on vacation and they really helped him to get his serve more ‘technically correct’….he’s translated this to his game as he’s gotten back and while he’s still double faulting about the same amount, his serve is a lot better.

They had an ‘invite’ on Wednesday, Kevin and Kyle won both their double matches (8-1 and 8-5).  The coach told the team if they were unhappy with their placement (Kevin was on the #2 doubles team…I was ok with this because he didn’t lose any ground being gone for ten days) they could talk to him.  Kevin saw who was playing #3 and #4 singles and talked to the coach afterwards; “I can beat those guys”.

Really happy that Kevin had the confidence to do this.

Practice Thursday and Friday he played a singles match against the #4 singles; he went down 2-0 in the first set, but came back to win 6-4 and 6-3.  So, as the true ‘meets’ (team against team) begin next week, he’s expecting to move up to singles (because he knows he can beat the #3 guy too…).

Soccer:  Matthew and Christopher’s team lost their first game today, 4-2.  An ugly game; we made stupid mistakes and really didn’t show up until the second half.  Matthew wasn’t really there (just didn’t seem engaged to me) and Christopher had his moments before I yanked him from the game for the fourth of four bad behavior (not soccer) decisions.  Told the kids I didn’t want us to be blaming our teammates for goals, and that’s what he did at the end to earn his place on the bench.  Oh well, we had a long talk afterwards and hopefully we won’t be in this spot again.

Final Waterproof Pictures, Part 1

Two sets of waterproof pictures to round out the vacation; one group from Crystal Cove State Park at Newport Beach and the second group from the pool at the Villas.  We’ll do the Newport ones in this post
