Saturday baseball

Decided to make the switch to Shutterfly, so, the videos are all over there.  Three of Matthew and one of Christopher

http://blindnutsquirrel.shutterfly.com/284

Went 1-1 on Saturday (so, looks like we’re about the average-most team out there!).  Christopher just had a horrible day at the plate Friday and Saturday…has completely changed how he’s swinging at the ball and it looks like he’s golfing and, well, he struck out more often than not.

Matthew, on the other hand, was just hitting the ball everywhere and was a little maniac on the basepads.  Slid into third (safe!), slid into second (out….but looked good doing it!), beat the tag at second, but, overran the bag, so, heads up, didn’t head back to the base (where he would have been out) but took off for third!

Also had a good play in the field….they make sure to drill into the guy who’s playing pitcher that if it’s a short ball, and there’s a force out at home, to run home with the ball and tag the plate.  Never really have had this happen for our team, but, finally, it did, with Matthew at pitcher.  He fields it, and realizes he’s not going to beat the kid coming from third, so throws it home, and, well, if the catcher had caught it, we’d have had an out.  But heads up realizing he wasn’t going to make it the one way…a lot of kids get brain lock when the first option doesn’t work out….

Friday Baseball

The boys finished the season with two games Friday and two games Saturday as part of a tournament….the team went 1-1 on Friday to move in to the not-winner-not-losers bracket on Saturday.

All videos below are shutterfly creations….trying to see if I want to make the switch

Travel

As the previous iphone-created post mentioned, I’m in West Palm Beach Florida today and tomorrow doing an environmental assessment.  So, some odds and ends.

Not sure if we’ll be doing much iphone-blogging in the future.  Just wanted to see what it was like.

Delta:  The only sign left of Northwest is on the planes, website, and announcements, and those are going away quick.  The plane I flew from Detroit to West Palm Beach, even though a NW flight, was a Delta plane (don’t know if it was repainted or that way to begin with).

Of course, these things take time, and don’t always work quite right in the, um, transition phrases.  Tonight, go out to nwa.com to check in…they redirect me to delta.com, and it crashes.  Can’t check in (I fly back on a mix of Northwest and Delta flights….so, Northwest wants me to check in on Delta).  So, go to delta.com….and they redirect me to northwest.com, and it crashes.  Oy!

This Gold World Perks stuff is pretty good….first class all the way down.  Looks like I’m going to be stuck in steerage for one of my three flights tomorrow though.

Food:  Met up with a colleague who flew in from Washington DC; we had a short chance to grab lunch and that first, and only place that we found near the site, to have lunch was the Caribbean Choice Bakery.

And man, it was the best lunch I’ve had in a while.  Had Jerk Chicken, asked for the small size, and ended up with 1/2 of a chicken with rice and beans that was spicy and awesome and awesome and spicy.

And I think I’m going to go back there for an early dinner before we go home tomorrow.

Home:  Was not looking forward to the heat down here, but, surprisingly, it was overcast, and in the eighties, and there was a nice breeze.  Not so much in Mid-Michigan today, and the irony of that is not lost on me.  Baseball went well; Matthew played first and caught a throw to get an out, Christopher had a hit, etc.  Kevin has track club; ran 3/8 mile uphill 8 times….need to write more about his running this summer at some point.

Boys are at zoo camp….might try to post about the summer camp schedule at some point.  Would like to have them go to Okemos Community Ed more this summer, but, that’s a story for another time.

Something different two: blogging from my phone. It is 7:30 am and just landed in Detroit. Going as far south as I've ever been in the US....West Palm Beach!

Video test

This post is just so I can see the difference in some of the video posting options.  Here’s what One True Media gives us

Here's Shutterfly's new video service (at least what I can copy from there over to the blog….Ok, I see know, you can’t imbed it like the one true media site, it’s just a link over to the shutterfly share site…..)

Click here to view this video

it looks better on the Shuttefly site, but, I don’t know if I like the click away AND that’s additional costs to upload all of the files we upload……may have to consider it though.

More Baseball

Season ends with a tournament next weekend; have to like lacrosse and baseball, they start, they end, they don’t drag on forever.

Christopher had 3 at bats this game and had 3 hits. The first two at bats ended up with him thrown out at 2nd when the next guy hit the ball right to the 2nd basemen. The third, Christopher made it all the way around and was called out at home to end the game....of course, our team thought he was safe!

The first video is actually the last of the at bats...

The big guy also had his turn at catcher!

Matthew only had 2 AB’s and had one good hit.

Soccer and Baseball

Soccer: The less said about the tryouts is probably the better at this point; nothing can cause controversy around here like tryouts for the travel team.  I need someone coming up and saying “You said on the blog….” like I need a hole in the head.

That being said…we had 23 boys come out for 22 spots; 1 boy has dropped out, another will probably play somewhere else, so, we won’t be cutting anyone which is good.  Matthew and Christopher both did well, not great, but well.  Matthew ‘graded’ out ahead of Christopher, and both ended up squarely in the middle of the group in the evaluations.

Baseball:  Boys are getting better in the field and making contact more frequently and with more power.  Matthew, particularly, has always been late on the ball and that would means weak hits to the 1st basemen that were easy outs.  That’s been improving recently.

First, a clip of Matthew from a game that I never posted.  This was the only highlight from that game; Christopher had a rough day.

Second, here’s video from Tuesday.  Christopher had some serious RBI action; because of my video position for this game you can see the runners going by in the background.

Matthew had one hit in this game as well.

Christmas in July

First, I discovered I can grab images off of the videos I play on Itunes.  Here are images from my two favorite videos right now…

2009 - Steelers Super Bowl

“Santonio…for the touchdown!”

2009 - Pens Stanley Cup

“Lord Stanley….bring me thy brandy!”

Was a good day at work today as the Red Wing fans, both there and as I dropped the boys off at Kids Club, had to face the music.  The strangest thing now is what I talked about at the zoo….at least 10 people there go out of the way to comment on my jersey and say the win was awesome and at Kids Club, with both boys garbed in Pens shirts, there were two or three people who said “nice shirts” and other things.

Where were you people during the playoffs?  Bandwagon jumping mid-Michigan semi-fans….blah!

Second, I discovered (or rediscovered), while cleaning up over the last few weeks, the CD that had the images from the trip to the portrait studio in December.  You’ve seen some of these images, but, here all of them, purchased and not.

Game 7 and the Rhino Romp

Friday:  I guess the difference this time (as opposed to the Super Bowl) was that there, I was expecting the Steelers to win, and would have been just crushed had they lost, and even after that Larry Fitz touchdown in the 4th still had plenty of faith.  Friday, as I told Kevin, I had embraced that this, in all likelihood, wasn’t going to end good.  1971 since a NHL team won a game 7 on the road, 1979 since the Buccos won a game 7 on the road, 30 out of 32 times the team that goes up 2-0 wins….it just doesn’t happen that often.  While I certainly hoped, and believed, the Pens would win, this was a lot different than the confidence I had before the Super Bowl.

My sweaty palms started before the game began (Suzanne got her chuckles at my expense, as again, I didn’t feel like eating because my stomach was churning around).  Start the game sitting, but, about 30 seconds of that and I’m standing in the living room for the rest of it.  Hockey, with the non-stop motion, is a lot different than football and the constant stopping and starting.  I don’t care if it’s Dallas –vs- Anaheim….there is nothing better than a Game 7 in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The evening moves along, Matthew comes down and watches most of the 2nd period with us and is forced up to his room for bed as the 3rd period begins (it’s 10 pm, he has to run early Saturday, and he’s starting to be a noisy pest….but he can watch it in his room if he wants).  Game goes on, and on, and after a final 6 minutes that were simply the most exciting hockey I’ve ever seen, the Pens win and life is good.  Think I shouted ‘yes’, sat down (finally) and get ready to watch the Cup.

Matthew runs down the stairs, naked as a jay bird, gets to the bottom of the stairs and is jumping up and down “yes yes yes yes!”.  Gets told to go put some pajamas on and comes back down (with pants) to celebrate!

Pull the computer out….go and catch up on Seth’s blog over at the Post Gazette, and type out the Facebook post I’ve been hoping against hope I would get to post.

Hossa (v) – 1. to give up a certain opportunity at greatness (ie, That guy, he could have been the President, but, he hossa’d it). 2. to disappear (ie, “Has anybody seen Marion lately?” “No, he hossa’d a few days ago.” 3. A noun: the Czech word for the German ‘Schaudenfruede’.

Turns out I misspelled schadenfreude.  This post was a lot better than the one after game 5

hey, I can go to bed early tonight.....

But that post makes me laugh now…I had friends of mine from around here who I’ve never talked hockey with; never had them come up and ask why the boys and I wear Pens gear or joke that those colors are bad…those friends showed up on Saturday to post in glee and excitement as the Pens got hammered.   I’ve resisted the urge to go and visit their pages…..

Stayed up until 1 am watching CBC and ESPN and the NHL Network and reading blogs and enjoying the win.

Saturday:  Off to the zoo early for the Rhino Romp; a kids race to support the new rhino exhibit that is going to be built.  Kevin stays at home to go to training with Mr. Hoffman…..more on that in a later post.

Wore my Letang jersey out to the race…..had at least 10 people come up and say “nice jersey”…I’m sure there were about a thousand more giving me evil looks, but, hey, I was going to wear it out (didn’t wear it Friday night…..Suzanne noticed this in the 3rd period and asked where it was….pointed out, silly as it was, that I had worn it for game 1 and 5, and those were two losses, so, it could stay in the closet for game 7.

Anyway, race begins with a kids sprint, and I caught Merissa as she raced for the finish line.

The main race began about 10 minutes after that.  The boys are in aqua-blue shirts from last year’s Dino Dash, so, pretty easy to pick out at the start (the official shirt for the race is grey).  Video has both start and finish….Matthew’s a good brother and slows down and lets Christopher catch up as they run through the zoo together.

The boys getting ready to run

Also got some footage of William as he started (spun back around after the boys went by and there he was….not much video, but, it’s there) and quite a bit as he finished.  Completely missed Cathleen as she finished; she was right there in front of me and I thought Christine was running with her and looked for her as the visual cue and by the time I realized Cathleen was there it was too late.  Oh well.

The run is done!  May be the only time that there’s a picture with Matthew and Christopher having shorter ‘cuts than William.

2009-06-cousinsrhinoromp

about the same as before, except for that crazy smile on the end!

We stayed and walked around the zoo after that.  Had a good time, it was overcast and cool so the animals were out.  The zoo has a new bird exhibit; 500 birds in an enclosure and you can buy seed sticks for a dollar and have them land on you and eat.  It’s really cool if you’re in the enclosure and the birds, en masse, decide to go from one end to another….they zip by you and you get quite a breeze as they go by.  Definitely the highlight of this visit.

this gray bird is twice as big as the others in the exhibit and certainly surprised Mom when it came in for a snack.
