Michigan Mile

Saturday morning was the Michigan mile; we've been going to the Mile for many many years. The Mile is the culmination of the "Feelin' Good Mileage Club" program that runs at lunchtime at the elementary schools in the area. Christopher, and, to a lesser extent, Matthew (because he's not full-time) have been participating in the lunch time running, and this morning is the chance to run a mile that begins in Oldsmobile Park (the Lansing Lugnuts stadium) and ends there. This is the first year that Christopher and Matthew could run the full mile, so, a big day.

Kevin, on a related note, has been running miles at gym trying to qualify for the "Chieftan Challenge". Apparently you need a 6:24 mile to qualify; Kevin's final two attempts were 6:30 and 6:28, so, he just barely missed it. But, the Michigan Mile accepts participants up to 13, so, Kevin signed up for the Mile as well.

The event starts with the older age groups first, so, Kevin started at 9 am. He finished in 6:01 (from experience, we know it's not a full mile, it's close though.....) and was about the 12th or 13th in the 12 and 13 age group.

Christopher was next up in the Age 7 group. We had decided that I would run with Christopher and that Kevin would run with Matthew. Seemed to be a good decision, we expected Christopher would take it slow, and well, we're well aware of Matthew's disposition in these type of events. So, we line up, get ready, go, and Christopher goes sprinting away from the start.....he's going, and going, and I catch up to him, and he's still sprinting, and sprinting......and I'm too big and can't keep up. Sadly, this was one outcome we hadn't discussed with Christopher beforehand, so, he was really confused at the end and finally came back up to the top and met up with me. A very sad and confused little boy at the reunion point. Never, in a million years, would I have thought Christopher was going to take off like that, but, I learned my lesson. Alas, no video of Christopher, because it was too hard for Mom to pick him out.

The Age 6 group started while I was picking up Christopher at the 'meeting' spot; we talked (he told me how sad he was, I apologized over and over), and then we decided to sit down and wait to see Matthew and Kevin come rolling in. Christopher asked how we would know when they came, and I said, "Well, I'm pretty sure Matthew's going to be near the front".

Matthew's description of the kid who kept trying to pass him is pretty good. "He tried, and I just sped up, and he tried again, and I just sped up!". It was nice to see Kevin cheering Matthew on and being proud of his little brother.

To the Construction Site

My Dad's in town this weekend; took him out to Selfridge to visit the construction project I'm managing. Since he refers to my job as "moving dirt", figured he'd get a kick out of watching dirt get moved.

The Dad (in approved safety vest and hard hat)

The dirt (impacted soil and debris disposed of here in the 60's and 70's are being moved to the former landfill and consolidated there)

Dad arrived Thursday afternoon; got to see soccer lessons for Matthew and Christopher and Christopher's baseball game that evening. Christopher had a successful outing, one strike out, one hit with a run scored, one put out where he tagged the guy again after fielding the ball as the pitcher and a successful catch and throw to first when he was playing second. Mud Hens scored their 2nd win. Friday was Selfridge; this morning was the "Michigan Mile" (that's a post of it's own later tonight!), tonight is Game 4!

Lacrosse is almost over

Last regular-season game last night; a loss, 4-2. Kevin's playing well, but, still hasn't found the back of the net. Four more games at the Cranbrook tournament this Sunday to get it done. Goal or no goal, Kevin's come a long way, and at least, at the end of this year, is fully committed to playing next year. Wasn't quite the same story at the end of last year.

Baseball

Christopher's first baseball game was Tuesday night. The Mud Hens (that's the team name) won, 11-9. The boys looked incredibly cute in their baseball uniforms.

Christopher made contact both times he was at bat as shown in the short video below

He had to sit out one turn in the field (13 kids, but only 10 play in the field), but played left field, shortstop, and pitcher (standing next to the pitching machine). Fielded the ball the only time it was hit to him, when he was the pitcher, and ran over and tagged the runner out as he was running to 1st base.

Kevin's recital

Footage from Kevin's recital on the 16th. Didn't realize until very late that Kevin was going to do this piece at the recital, and let him know that I wasn't happy that it was going to be this piece because I hoped that the lessons would be challenging to him. Mentioned this to his instructor after one lesson as well, and, the instructor relayed that he was having troubles getting the music he wanted from the store where we take the lesson.

So, one quick conversation about amazon.com links, 2 emails later, and Kevin now has all kinds of challenging music to play over the summer.

But, the recital is what it is. Kevin had never done this with the piano, and, I think, gets a little confused at one point.

Up North

Saturday

Rise and shine, 7 am, we're on the road heading North. 3 1/2 hours later, we're at St. Ignace, and on the ferry heading over to Mackinac Island. So we're clear, that's pronounced Mack-i-naw.

Weather on Saturday was picture-perfect; high about 70 degrees, bright sunshine all day. Started our time on the island by picking up lunch, and then we took a horse carriage tour of the island (Mackinac Island does not have any motorized vehicles). Ended the tour at Fort Mackinac, where we paid the admission and went inside this refurbished post. They've done a nice job of showing the way the post looked in the late 1800's, and, the highlight was the rifle firing demonstration.

Matthew, particularly, was very taken with the demonstration and was the first one over to talk with the soldiers afterwards.

We concluded our time on the Island by renting some bikes and taking what turns out to be the first Family Bike Ride....we did the 8-mile circuit around the perimeter of the island. Christopher and Matthew did fairly well, no falls, no spills, but, didn't really stay on the right side of the road and, in Matthew's case, wasn't paying attention once and ran his bike through a pile of horse manure. Oops.

Took the ferry back over to St. Ignace, and, by mutual consent, agreed to an easy dinner of pizza delivery. Took the boys to the pool, came back and had dinner, watched the Penguins, went out for the bonfire the hotel has every night, and ended the night watching the Penguins play like minor leaguers.

Hotel is two rooms, king bed in one room, double bed on the other side. Choosing which two boys have to sleep together could be a tricky parental task, but, thankfully, Christopher makes this easy for us. He's the only boy that sleeps "au natural" and the other two want nothing to do with THAT, so, problem solved.

Sunday

Leave St. Ignace after having breakfast and head north to Sault Ste. Marie. Get there at 10:30 just in time to hop on the boat tour. Big mistake, 2 hours of our lives we'll never get back. I mean, going through the Soo Locks was cool (it's the set of locks that makes transport of goods from Lake Superior to Lake Huron possible), but, the there must be a real lack of things to see around Sault Ste. Marie since one of the highlights of the tour was 20 minutes in and around the Algoma Steel Mill. Which, I guess is cool for some people, but, if I wanted a mill tour, I'd head down the Mon.

After St. Ignace we headed west to Whitefish Point and the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum. Here you can find the bell from the Edmund Fitzerald. Again, the museum and lighthouse were really well done, the boys enjoyed walking through the museum and having Mom explain what the exhibits were and the ships they were talking about and enjoyed seeing how the lighthouse keepers lived. Suzanne kept referring to the Big Fitz as the Ella Fitzgerald, so, I had to point out at one point the difference between jazz legends and subjects of Gordon Lightfoot songs.....

Last stop on the tour of the Upper Peninsula was Tahquamenon Falls. Two sets of waterfalls, Upper and Lower, and the Upper Falls are the largest east of the Mississippi outside of that big set on the Niagara River.

From Wikipedia...."the water is notably brown in color from the tannins leached from the cedar swamps which the river drains"

At some point, Suzanne and I had the idea that the hike from the Upper to the Lower falls was only 2 miles, so, me and the boys agreed to do the hike and meet Mom and the car down at the Lower Falls. Turns out, it's 4 miles, and by the time I figured that out (the sign at the trail head) it was too late to go back. Four miles of medium difficulty trail. So, it took us about 90 minutes to make the hike, up and down hills, along the river edge. Boys did really well on the hike, but, were very happy to see Mom when we got to the Lower Falls.

Weather on Sunday was mostly cloudy; very cloudy and just starting to rain at Whitefish point, but, sunny at Tahq falls and then slowly clouding over as we walked to the Lower Falls. Right as we began to leave the park the rain began, and, it rained all the way back to St. Ignace with thunder and lightning. A good trip though, Kevin's been studying Mars and had a field trip recently to the space museum in Kalamazoo as part of a "mission to Mars", so, it was cool to listen live to CNN as we drove back to the hotel as the Phoenix Mars Lander arrived and landed on Mars.

Another trip to the swimming pool that night (through the wind and the rain to get from the hotel building to the pool building...brrrr!) and that was that.

Monday was pretty boring...very foggy; but, went over to Mackinaw City (yes, this time it has the 'w' at the end. Mackinaw City is the city on the Lower Peninsula side of the bridge; St. Ignace is the Upper Peninsula city). Did some light shopping, and then loaded up and headed home.

Lacrosse Pictures

One of the other parents has been taking a lot of photos of the recent lacrosse games. Here are the ones he grabbed of Kevin.

100% boy

Kevin wouldn't have done this. Christopher? Probably not.

Matthew: "Mom, do we have any rubberbands?"

Mom: "Why?"

...no real answer provided...Dad and Mom look around, finally locate one. About 10 minute later, Matthew emerges from the house, with the Y-shaped stick he's used his scotch tape and rubber band to convert into a pretty decent weapon.

Dad: "Where did you come up with the idea for that?

Matthew: "The Simpsons Movie"

Guess we should count ourselves lucky that he can't build lightsabers.....

Weekend update

All Hutsell males wore flightless fowl black and gold gear to school or work today.

Have to like this feature of the internet.

Lacrosse: Kevin's team went 0-4 over the weekend. Kevin reports his coaches yelled out that he was doing well and used his (and another kids) defense as an example, so, that's good. Every practice, every game, they do a warm-up lap, and I've told Kevin before that I don't see any reason why he shouldn't be out in front on that lap, and so, I get a great deal of enjoyment watching those laps and seeing him out in front and not just 'doing the lap' but making the effort to be out in front.

The game against Dewitt, his friend, Dean, was right behind him when they ran by the parents, so, I yelled out to Dean, "Come on, you can catch him!" Made Kevin have to sprint to the finish, so, that was good.

Soccer: Last outdoor game of the year; Mighty Rhinos lost. Team kind of forgot a lot of the passing-spreading-out-position stuff I've been trying to teach them. Oh well.

Movie: Saw "Prince Caspian" in between lacrosse games on Saturday. Good, kind of long.

Upcoming: heading up north to Mackinaw Island next weekend.

And that's the end of that....

From the newswires:

"The network (CBS) also formally canceled sitcom Welcome To The Captain, musical drama Viva Laughlin! and cutthroat-kiddie reality series Kid Nation. ..."

Good and the bad

and this is the bad...sadly, I'm sure that 10 years from now this is what I'll remember the 6th grade concert for.

Excerpts from email yesterday.

"Hello Scott and Suzanne,

I am sorry to inform you about some very negative behaviors that Kevin chose to display at our 5th / 6th Grade Orchestra concert last evening....I am surprised at Kevin’s choices, since on the whole, Kevin is usually a respectful student. I think in this situation, Kevin made some wrong choices about who to sit with and how to behave sitting with the other two boys."

VERY dark and cloudy night for Kevin yesterday.......

18 minutes later, the home email had this:

"Hello Scott and Suzanne,

I wanted to let you know that Matthew's behavior in music today was
very disrespectful."

It's not often that Christopher is the only walking around NOT in trouble. :)

Beware the Penguins

ooooh, a Penguins - Red Wings final is going to be a big event in Okemos, Michigan! Kevin and I already have plans for an outdoor display for the Red Wings diehard across the street.

Music and Sports

Kevin's Spring Concert was Tuesday night. 6 or 7 songs below, warning, 3 are repeats from last week's posting. the first song is the one where some students learned a harmony; you can see Kevin's one of the ones that took that option.

Sports Update: Kevin's lacrosse team lost on Monday; he played well, had some quality possessions and was more aggressive in defending.

Baseball has started; Matthew can't play yet, the team is only 1st grades and 2nd graders and my appeal to have him play wasn't successful (if I coached, ok, but, I didn't want to coach.) But, there aren't enough parent volunteers, so, like t-ball, I'll be out there almost all of the time anyway.

Long story short, Matthew, Christopher, and I show up at practice. Baseball at this level starts with a pitching machine; Christopher gets up there and takes his swings, and unlike many 1st graders, makes contact on pitch 9 of 10 and runs up to first base.

Matthew's out in the field with me, and the coach lets him hit last. Pitch 2 Matthew makes contact, fouls it off; pitch 4, Matthew punches one up the middle for the base hit. Sadly, my change in coaching 'status' is too late to get him on the roster, but, he'll get to practice.

Soccer tonight (took Mother's day off, today was the make up). Matthew and Christopher both score as we won.

Weekend Update

A rarity in these parts this weekend; no sports events. That's right, no soccer, no lacrosse, no tennis, no nothing!

So, of course, we're out all day Saturday. Went to the Detroit Zoo and then trucked up to Great Lakes Crossing for dinner.

Sunday was "Suzanne gets the day off" day.

Took the boys to "Speed Racer" in the afternoon. We were all going to go, but multiple reviews saying the movie only had appeal for young boys was enough to convince Suzanne to spend a rainy afternoon by the dvd player at home.

Speed Racer, you ask? Colorful, the racing sequences were awesome, but, am glad Suzanne stayed at home because it was lacking in many ways (essentially, if the cars weren't racing, the movie stunk).

Next weekend: 4 lacrosse games and one soccer game. Back to normal.

Sports Desk

The lacrosse team lost 8-5 last night, below is video from the game (it's a longer video, but, Kevin has his moments during it, including an assist towards the end).

Concert for 5th Graders

The 6th Grade Choir, Orchestra, and Band put on a concert for the visiting 5th graders at Chippewa yesterday. These three songs will also appear in Kevin's spring concert next week, but, here's a preview.

Spring concerts have begun!

Arrived late to this one; Kevin had a lacrosse game across town and we scrambled to get back and missed the first 5 minutes (which, of course, were 2 of Matthew's classes songs).

The concert was a combined K-1-2 concert, so, the last two songs were all of the kids. The placement of the Hutsell kids is kind of amusing......

Weekend Update

Matthew: 2 birthday parties. Nothing like 10 kindergarten'ers to tire a set of parents out!

Christopher and Matthew: Soccer on Sunday. Won by a lot....Matthew had several goals, Christopher had 2 very nice ones as well.

Hutsell's: Retired the old circle trampoline and welcomed the new square trampoline to the family. Square trampoline meeting with rave reviews "It's square-r, it's bouncier", etc.

Dad and Kevin: Went to the OHS production of "Kiss Me, Kate". Very well done, hope one day to see Kevin in a production like that.

Wiley: Still working on getting him to use the side yard; lots of improvement today. But, I had taken the collar off while working with him (figured a shock would set us back in our progress) and Wiley took this opportunity for a bolt to freedom. Sigh....
