Monday Update

Flag Football: Remember my complaints about the weather last Sunday? I take it all back; yesterday was flurries, windy, and just miserable. Matthew's little hands were ice cubes by the end of it. The last game was notable for one reason....Matthew mentioned his coach told him 'no stiff arms'....not sure why that is, but, ok. Matthew seemed unconcerned...he told me before the game that no stiff arms meant the return of the spin move.

Soccer: Played the same team as Saturday and battled to a 4-4 tie. Really good game, a lot of back and forth play, very enjoyable. Both boys played well, Christopher had a good chance in the 2nd quarter, and Matthew buried a penalty kick in the first (the ref called a lot of this today, which, I think is good and bad. She called it, obviously, when the kids reached up in the box to stop the ball, but, on one of the other team's free kicks, the ball was coming right at Matthew's head, and he raised up his arms to block it from smacking him in the head, and she called that too. Technically, she's right, but, with 6-7 years old, in the outdoor soccer rules, you don't whistle the ones where they are defending themselves.....who am I kidding, I'm just griping because it cost us a goal!).

Three videos are here, you can find Matthew's goal about 40 seconds into the 1st quarter.

Kitchen: Still moving forward. Had the counter guys come out for the measure today. Very interesting to see how they do it, makes perfect sense once you see it, but, don't know if I would have thought they would have done it that way beforehand. They laid out styrofoam strips where the edges of the counter would be, glued them in place on the cabinet tops, glued the strips to each other, and then cut them apart to transport back to the shop for reassembly and fabrications. They ended up taking our sink and faucet too, just to make sure they have it right. Sounds like we might have the countertop in 2 weeks.....hopefully that's on target!

In this picture, you can see how far we plan on having the overhang go towards the sliding glass doors...all the way to the trim (the foam piece that's running parallel to the cabinets).

We're going to end up with two seams; both where the right angles occur on each side of the sink.

Oh...the boys (and the cats) have had an unbelievably good time with the sink box. You'll note the Pokemon handbook is really popular right now.

Basement: Construction is in full swing....drywall is scheduled for early next week. But, the walls for the bedroom are framed in. They need to frame in around the pipe and along the walls where the concrete is exposed, and also cut into the wall near the storage room for the closet opening. It's not really going to end up being a closet, we're going to be putting an Ikea storage unit in there.

Saturday Update

Another full day in mid-Michigan:

Christopher: For the longest time, Christopher complained about any clothes that he had to wear as too tight, or too scratchy, and wailed and wailed if they irritated him in any way. It's a relief to his parents that those times are mostly gone.....he finally accepts blue jeans willingly, and well, he's always been good about dressing himself in the morning and making good fashion choices. Here was his shirt choice for today....stylin!

Soccer: Went a lot better today....the Chargers ended up losing 8-5, but, it was 5-4 us in the middle of the 3rd quarter. Not sure how it came off the rails in the final 15 minutes or so, but, really happy with the improvement the team showed. Christopher played well, but, had a complete lapse in defense in the 4th quarter (ok, so I know one of the reasons it came off the rails.....sigh). Twice, he broke the cardinal rule, don't dribble into the middle when you're on defense. Oh well. Clanged a shot off the wall next to the goal....happily, it bounced straight to his brother, who, well......

Matthew had an outstanding day, he certainly had the hat trick, and may have had one more...it's hard to tell. Video of both the boys below....the highlight for me is the last goal (if you're not willing to watch about 12 minutes of video, just skip to about 1 minute from the end). I didn't see what Matthew did after the goal because I was busy getting new players on the field, and when I watched it on tape I busted up laughing and had to ask Suzanne if she saw it (she did).

Not that it's hard to pick out the boys, but they are sporting different numbers. There were two 26's last year; Matthew's wearing Kevin's 12 this year, and we also would have had two 10's this year, so, Christopher has moved on to #4.

We play the same team tomorrow at 1 pm, so, we'll see how it goes.

Movie: Went to see Madagascar 2 with the cousins. Came away disappointed with the movie, which is too bad. One week until the Trek trailer shows up in the theatres!

Kitchen: After muttering multiple curse words at Joepa's crew for scoring field goals, not touchdowns, completed work on more of the kitchen.

We used the long-ago-purchased-but-never-assembled-until-last weekend table saw to cut the oven panel we had to size to be the cover for the dishwasher, as shown above. That table saw is a wonderful thing......Suzanne had major concerns about me cutting off fingers or arms. I had major concerns about getting the cuts right (not a strong suit for me), but, in the end, it turned out fine. Attached with L-brackets on the floor and on the left side against the cabinet as you look at it.

The dishwasher is propped up because I need to add to the water supply line hose to make the connection work; that's tomorrow's morning project.

We purchased another base cabinet to put in the blind spot so that we could secure the cabinet to the wall and secure the other cabinets to this new cabinet for extra stability. Didn't really need to do this, but, it was cheap, and easy enough to do, so, what the hey. You'll notice that it's white, not birch. They were out of stock in birch, and because you'll never see it, we just bought a white one.

Of course, if you don't want to see the white cabinet, you need to add something to cover it up. This is two pieces of trim that I cut to size and secured together. Still need to secure it to the cabinet and the white cabinet, but, this picture shows the end result.

Friday November 7th

This is the 250th post! "Wow, that's a lot!" says Suzanne......

Here's the pictures taken at 9:36 pm last night.....

Christopher's very consistent; it's 9:30, it's bed time, and it really doesn't matter what the rest of the family is doing; he's crawling up into bed and going to sleep.

That's the libretto for School House Rocks Live Jr. in Kevin's hands. He was practicing the songs. He's memorized all of his lines (had that done by Wednesday) and is looking forward to opening night in two weeks! Behind Kevin is the mess that's his room...you can see the folded piece of paper in the background; that's one of the progress reports we received at parent-teacher conferences this week. For Kevin, it was the same-old-same-old type of report....really needs to work on that 0.3% to bring up his social studies grade to an 100%, for example.

Matthew was on the prowl for a football game on TV.....he also spent some time downstairs looking at his new Pokemon handbook. The boys p/t conference is on Monday; Matthew's will be good, Christopher's not-so-good....the big guy is having a fair amount of trouble adjusting to the academics in 2nd grade.

Of course, kitchen work continues. This picture shows the cabinet just to the right of the stove, we've added some dividers (you can see the once circular one and you can see the other through the grates in the other pad) for our cookie sheets and flat pans.

And, of course Wiley is doing his usual Friday night thing. Just Chillin'.

Good things do come to those who wait....

First, I should have included some photos of the new sink, so here they are.

Second, the one picture I posted yesterday of the kitchen came out all orange; I have been directed to remove the offending picture and offer these in it's place. You can see the lazy susan; we moved the lower shelf up quite a bit; there's still enough room on that shelf for our largest pot, and now there's room underneath it to store other things.

Third....got a very surprising call from Kevin today. I had completely forgotten about this one piece of musical business that was left unfinished....when they announced the roles, they did not award one part, Tom, the teacher, around whom the whole show revolves. At the first rehearsal, they had said they were considering having an adult play that part, since, there isn't a lot of singing for the part, and well, the teacher is supposed to be an adult. So, we forgot all about it.

Kevin was walking down the hall to the auditorium and the director stopped him and asked "Would you like to play the role of Tom in the musical?" Kevin, of course, says yes.....and as the director is taking attendance at musical he announces to the cast that Kevin will be playing the part. The part is more speaking than singing, so, his move out of the chorus will have him singing less (but, he'll get to keep his 2-line solo!)....we're not sure how much at this point. Quite a pleasant surprise!

The Mother of all Weekend Updates

Whew! This might be the longest post ever!

Friday: Christopher had his physical....he should have had a chicken pox booster, but, because we were trying to hurry back to school for his Halloween party, we skipped it...we'll do it next year.

Hearing and vision good (20/30)....probably should take both Matthew and Christopher to the optometrist soon in any case.

On to the charts!

The good news here (the really outstanding news!) is that Christopher has continued his trend towards the good parts of the BMI chart. All of that running is making a difference....

Projecting Christopher at Kevin age: 5'8", 160 lbs. Kevin is 5'4" (he's had a growth spurt recently) and about 95 lbs.

At Matthew's physical, which I don't think I ever typed about, he fell right between the 90 and 95 curves. And his toe is still bent. Dr: "Does it affect his running or athletics?" ummm, no.

Halloween!: Very weird to have trick or treating start in daylight because of the switch in daylight savings time dates. But, the boys were ready to get out at 6 pm.

A very Star Wars Halloween. Christopher is a Jedi, Matthew's a clone trooper, and well, Kevin's the Grim Reaper. The boys went through the neighborhood together, and then Kevin, Matthew, and one of Kevin's friends went on to the other neighborhoods to collect as much loot as they could....Christopher was tired of it and returned home with Mom. The couple up the street ended up giving all of their leftover candy to Kevin and the gang when the came by at the end of the festivities at 8 pm.

Basketball: Saturday morning's events begin with something I forgot to mention on Friday. We've signed Christopher up for basketball, and while the season doesn't start until January, they are having clinics over at the middle school every Saturday this month. So, after the requisite "I don't want to do this!" comments from Christopher, Suzanne and I take him over and leave Kevin to watch Matthew and get ready for soccer.

It will come as no surprise that Christopher is the biggest kid in this session of 40+ 2nd graders. Suzanne and I overheard one girl talking to her friend....as they were walking in they must have been talking about their height, and the one girl was pretty tall, but, she told her friend as they walked by Christopher "I'm a pipsqueak compared to him!". They spent most of the session (that I saw, had to leave early to get over to soccer) doing footwork drills, little small foot movements, that, well, aren't going to be Christopher's center of excellence. But, he did surprisingly well at them, much better than some of the other kids.

Christopher did say, at the end, that he did have fun at basketball. Which is why we've learned to ignore the complaints as we start out.....that, and the positive results on the BMI chart!

Indoor Soccer: Well, when you play a team of mostly 1st graders up an age group against a team of 2nd graders, you're going to take your lumps. And that's what happened, we must have lost 10 or 11 to nothing. There's a big learning curve here, and things will get better as the season progresses. Matthew had fun in his first chance to play on the big field; he had his moments, but, he's not going to be able to dribble through 3 kids that are older (and of equal skill) than him. Christopher also played well, had a turn in goal and played great, way better than he ever did in outdoor soccer. Kevin taped most of this game (before leaving early with Mom for the next event), so, there might be some video of this online later this week.

All-State Viola: Kevin and Mom left after the 3rd quarter to get Kevin over to the middle school for the audition.

Mom reports that Kevin got really nervous leading up to his audition.....nauseous, really quiet...his orchestra teacher was there and noticed and told him to relax!

He warmed up and was able to go in and do his audition early. What happens is that all of the auditions are taped, and, I think, next weekend, all of the viola tapes are listened to by one panel of judges, and, that's where the decision is made. Kevin was happy with his performance...he did good, but not great, on the etude (pictured above); he's never done the piece completely perfect and he says he made his usual stumble in the audition (the toughest part for Kevin is the beginning, before the highlights....as soon as he hits the highlights he's perfect.). Did the scales that he had to do next, and then finished with the sight reading that he reports was easy easy easy (which is too bad, Kevin would probably have been better served to have something more challenging that he would look better at and others would look not-so-good at.)

So, we'll find out the results in a week...hopefully.

Kitchen
: Spent most of the rest of Saturday and a lot of Sunday working in the kitchen. More than a few interesting developments as we try to finish off the base cabinets and get ready for countertop installation.

Took the time to level out the base cabinets we had only roughed in early. Had to perform some repairs to the cabinet near the stove (with the lazy susan); some of the cam locks weren't completely tightened and we had to drill through the center support for the lazy susan to lift the bottom 'shelf' up so that it wasn't hitting the hinge. Cinched the cabinets together, and secured them to the wall, and, as you can see, put the doors on them.

One of the things that has been on our minds a lot has been the termination on the other side of the dishwasher. We realized late Saturday night that we had bought the wrong size part (cover panel) and it wasn't going to completely cover the cabinet and the dishwasher. Suzanne, this morning, had a brillant idea....why don't we rotate the 12" cabinet that we have at the end so that it faces out towards the front door? That way, we only have to get a normal, in-stock, cover panel and we won't have to do the multiple cuts that we thought we were going to have to do.

So, spent some time Sunday switching that cabinet around and adding the doors on the other set of cabinets on the other side of the counter. Still need to get another 18" door; we somehow are missing one of those. Oh well.

There's an electrical outlet over along the wall that's a problem. We're going to try and move it out towards the sliding door about 2-3" so that it still accessible. We'll see.....

The most trying part of the kitchen activities was the realization that the painstakingly-researched, lovingly-selected, once-delivered-but-now-returned, sink....well, it's not going to fit in our space. Or, better said, it might fit, but, they'll never be any room behind it for the faucet.

This lightbulb-going-on-over-the-head event caused quite the wave of depression to sweep into the house. After much knashing of teeth, talking-off-of-ledges, calls to kitchen-suicide-prevention-hotlines, we realized that a) no, the sink wasn't going to work and b) we were going to have to pick another one, and c) we were going to have the counter guys measure the kitchen with just a template....given that we're a little unsure of how the sink is going to mount and that we might have to modify our sink cabinet to accommodate it, that doesn't seem like a good idea. We need to have the sink in place before we can have the kitchen measured for counter tops.

At least picking out the new sink wasn't hard. And, it was available at Home Depot, and, it's in stock somewhere nearby, so, we should have it mid-week. But, it's going to push the counter measurements back a few days.

Flag Football: Was a crappy weather day for football, cloudy, rainy, but, the kids played anyway and had a good time. The weather, for Halloween, and yesterday, and even most of Sunday morning and early afternoon, has been beautiful and the kids have been outside almost all of the time (a good thing as Mom and Dad were trying to get the kitchen in order). But, it clouded up and got colder for game time.

Matthew had a good game, no TD's, multiple dropped catches(!), and one just completely-awesome-interception that gets better and better the more you look at it.

It's too bad that the rule is you can't advance a fumble, or an interception, Matthew would have quite a few returns for touchdowns by now. When I was converting this movie, I was watching it, and I watched it again, and I watched it again, and I finally noticed that, man, that kid really got up in the air.

And I had to go back frame by frame and see just how high he jumped. Capturing a still image off the video tape is never a recipe for a good quality picture, but, you can see the height of his jump quite clearly.

I uploaded the video while Suzanne was off at the store; when she came home I showed her this picture.....she says that Matthew was saying "Did you see how high I jumped?" when he ran over to the sideline and after the game, but, we were both sitting right there at the game and really didn't notice it at the time.

Wait, there's more?: Only had one more image to post....found it in Kevin's backpack with some other stuff he was supposed to bring home. Haven't had a chance to ask what it is; I don't think it's a school assignment, but, who knows...

Busy Weekend Ahead

By the time I hop on the flight to Dayton Sunday night, a lot, hopefully, will be accomplished around here. At least I have that Detroit layover Sunday night to update the blog! Starting at noon tomorrow.....

1) Halloween will have come and gone. That will be an adventure in of itself, we have to go to a party before trick or treating, we have to get Kevin to viola practice, and then we have to get back here for the actual trick or treating.

2) We have to get the kitchen base cabinets locked into place for the countertop measurement on Wednesday. We (I...) have been procrastinating on this, but, it has to be done this weekend.

3) Kevin has his all-state audition Saturday at 12:20. He reports that he's 99% confident in his scales, 90% confident in his etude, and we feel pretty good about his sight reading skills, so, we'll see. The list of auditions is online, it looks like there are about 34 middle school violas trying out for what I guess will be 12 spots.

4) First indoor soccer game of the year.....we're hoping to have Kevin tape at least part of it since both the boys will be playing.

5) Matthew has flag football Sunday. Looks like the weather will cooperate!

6) I need to finish getting the stuff out of the basement and the carpet ripped out so that construction can begin down there on Wednesday.

7) and....Christopher's physical is Friday afternoon. I think the big guy is going to get a shot, and, as mentioned before, we'll real curious to see that growth chart!

Good think Penn State's on a bye and the Steelers are on Monday Night!

"Things that make me smile for $400"

1) While there's a lot of things that Matthew does really well at flag football, the one that made me smile the most this weekend was his two plays at quarterback. He didn't just say "Set, Hike!", he barked them out loud enough that they heard him on the other field.

2) Measurement for the countertop is next Wednesday. We had figured that the 10% sale at Ikea for purchases over $2500 only applied for a single purchase, but, found out today that we can take in our receipts from the time that the sale started, and, since we are now over the $2500, can get 10% back off of them.

3) Am listening to Kevin practice the viola......I really enjoy listening to him as he goes through his various compositions. He was playing the Largo from the New World Symphony the other day...always enjoy when he plays something I know and it takes a minute for me to recognize it. All-state auditions are Saturday, we'll see how he does.

4) One of the Schoolhouse Rock kids has left the musical because he made the basketball team, this has opened up one of the soloist parts for Kevin. So, he now has a 2 line solo during the Interplanet Janet song.

The President's Own

Matthew, Christopher, Kevin and I went to see the United States Marine Band Monday night. The Band tours the country on a regular basis, and, while tickets are free, you do have to request them in advance. We didn't do this at first, but, a very kind coworker did, and she ended up not going, so, I took the boys and went.

And they were really awesome. We sat in the very back row of the balcony section (seating was general admission)....far enough away that I could see the discrepancy between the conductor's downswing and me hearing the beat that would correspond with that. But, the boys liked it and that might be the only time we ever sit there! Matthew fell asleep against me halfway through the 1st part of the program, and Christopher, and even Kevin, was getting restless as the program went on, so, we left at the intermission. But, they were really really good, and the boys liked picking out the different instruments.

Sunday Update

For sports, it's all Matthew today.

First was flag football. Matthew only rotated through as running back once...those are the first 3 plays you see. Spent some time as QB, and had some defensive highlights.

Soccer was a bust.....every week one team (of the 11) has two games back to back, this week we were playing the team that had already played a game, so, they started out tired. And they weren't very good. And our worst players weren't there. So, it was a steady diet of Matthew, Greg, and the other players, and well, we agreed to call the game at the half (and the score at that point must have been twenty-something to nothing). Oh well...hard to tell 1st graders not to score, and, the boys really did a good job of passing to score goals (which is all I can ask for), so, that's just how it is sometimes. Today's game has helped to solidify our decision to make sure Matthew plays next spring up a level

Saturday Night was pumpkin carving night. While Dad was occupied with the Nittany Lions, Mom and the boys de-gutted and carved out a few of the gourds.

Woo Hoo!

Saturday Update

An update in three parts:

Kitchen: A day of slow progress on the little things that need to get finished up. Picture first, description second

Had to add some planks to our hardwood floor around the dishwasher area. You can see in the picture above the 'plank' that was already there...it's the one on the upper left where the dishwasher used to be; it was not full width (not 3", but 2 1/4"). We had to add a plank on each side of that one...width doesn't matter. That involved laying down some more plywood and cutting the planks to the right length. Took a while to get done, but, it's finished.

Suzanne spent a lot of time today installing the lazy susan in the one cabinet. We discovered that we want the door on the other side, so, we'll be redoing the hinges soon, and, that there's a little bit of a design flaw for the bottom section of the lazy susan...it hits the hinges as it swings around. Suzanne has read about this on the source of all knowledge, the Ikeafans website, so, we'll be trying a fix for that soon as well.

Had to add legs to the wall cabinets that we are using as base cabinets on the other side of the dishwasher.

And, had to cut off the very back ledge of the wall cabinets since we're using them as base cabinets. This ledge is a support feature for where the cabinet hangs on the wall, but, they have to come off to secure them to the other base cabinets. Could have cut it off before assembly, but, it was just pretty simple to do afterwards.

Sports: Last outdoor soccer game for Christopher. Won 1-0, again, the team had a ton of chances but didn't convert, well, only converted one of them. Christopher had two great chances and kicked it right at the goalie. Probably did his best work on defense....we dominated the team we were playing so I asked Christopher to play at midfield and just keep kicking the ball back in to the offense anytime the other team tried to clear it, and, of all the kids assigned this task, he was the most successful at it.

Viola: Kevin's preparation for his all-state audition and the solo and ensemble festival continue, but, with a new development. Turns out the orchestra teacher has suggested to Kevin that the piece he's performing for the solo festival might be too difficult for him. She asked Kevin to consider it, and, then called Kevin's private instructor to discuss it. We heard all about this after his lesson Friday.

Kevin doesn't understand why his parents are a little irked by this....if there might be a problem, we wish we were consulted...we don't think it's quite right that she went straight to Jon. The more we think about it, we're a little irked that the whole subject came up at all. She's never heard Kevin play the piece! If this whole conversation had happened after listening to Kevin for the three minutes it would have taken him to play it (he has it memorized!), that might be a different matter as well.

Kevin's doing the 2nd movement of the concerto by Telemann that he's been working on forever for the festival.

Sink Update and a discourse on puddle jumping

Forgot to mention that the sink arrived yesterday. It's cracked. So, Suzanne spent time on the phone with customer service, and that one is going back, and another one is on the way.

I'm sitting in Detroit Metro again this morning, after another quick jaunt to WV to see the sites. I'm becoming quite an expert on Northwest's fleet of small planes. Here's what you can expect if you're doing the Lansing to Canton/Dayton/Columbus/Charleston shuffle...on the planes that are, I believe, referred to as puddle-jumpers.

The Saab S340. A prop jet (a jet engine turns the propellers) and the smallest of the Northwest fleet. Suprisingly roomy on the inside, one seat on one side of the aisle, two on the other. Lots of head room, and the seats feel pretty large. Good windows. Like all small planes, this model suffers from a lack of sufficient airflow from the vents. Lack of air flow sucks in a stale overheated cabin, especially when the woman or man next to you has really loaded on the perfume or aftershave (like this morning, for example). I always find it pretty amusing that landing speed is the same as flying speed; there's no noticeable throttling back of the engines as we come in to land.

The CRJ100 or CRJ200. 2 seats on each side of the aisle. Not a lot of head room, not a lot of air flow. Windows that are impossible to look out of while you are on the ground (unless you stoop). Sadly, I'm stuck on these a lot now, and they suck.

The CRJ900. For everything that is sucky about the CRJ, this model from the engineers at Bombardier is awesome. It's newer, so, it has lots of head room and seat space. Has a first class cabin (so, there's a chance I can get out of steerage). Only been on this thing once (on a DTW-LAN hop) and hope I get to see it on more of these smaller flights.

Once upon a time I looked at a flight on a DC-9 as an unavoidable alternative; now, I'm excited to be on one. Full-size jet, but it's old...the last one ever was built in 1982. Decent seat room, awesome air flow, good windows. Used to get these a lot on the Lansing-Detroit hops, now, with all the cutbacks, they've been mostly replaced by those sucky CRJ's. But, I fly one home today.

Kitchen Update

Wasn't going to do a kitchen update, since it's been slow, but, SOME people are addicted to kitchen updates, soooooooo...

Here's the sink we've picked out.

We're still trying to decide where to position the faucet. You can see in the one picture that they have it centered in the sink (my vote), but, Suzanne thinks it might be best centered over the drain. We'll see how it works out.

This weekend we need to get all of the cabinets in place and figure out how much filler we need before we move on to the countertop. Received a quote from the local shop....it looks like they'll be about $1000 higher than buying it from Ikea. Of course, that all depends on if we go with that countertop....last night, Suzanne asked "Are we set on the countertop?" which is code words for "I don't know if I'm set on it, will you agree with me so that we can look at other options?". But, I like it. Suzanne thinks a counter top that's either lighter or darker would 'pop' more, provide more of a contrast. I don't disagree, but, I like the color of the chocolate cognac and think that it leaves room for a backsplash that provides some 'pop'.

Master-y

Figured I'd scan in some of Kevin's recent 'instructions' from the master-level instruction he's getting......first up are Kevin's notes from his viola lesson on Friday. Suzanne and I couldn't be happier that we were lucky (and that's what it is, luck, we just went to the local store and asked about signing Kevin up for lessons, and Jon was the guy) enough to have Jon teaching Kevin.

The next two scans are from the notes Kevin wrote down after his meeting with the cross-country master; Ashton's Dad from up the street. Ken runs all the time, we only just noticed at this year's Capital City run that he had won his age group in last year's event. As we've talked with him about Kevin's success and enjoyment of cross-country, Ken had said that if Kevin wanted to keep training through the rest of the year that he could help Kevin really improve on his times. And I said 'thanks, I'll mention it to Kevin', but, wasn't sure if Kevin would want to do that, because, at times, Kevin really doesn't want to do the extra work to make the next step in his athletic performance.

But, Kevin did, immediately after cross-country ended, ask Ken if they could sit down and talk, and then, on Thursday, spend more than an hour up the street taking notes, setting up a training plan, learning about 'core training' and 'pliametrics'. Diligently, Kevin went running yesterday, as prescribed in the plan, and will go running today, and Tuesdays, and Thursdays. All according to plan.
