Winter Vacation 2014 – Atlanta

The winter vacation begins early Saturday morning; Christopher, Matthew, and I are heading south with the car.  Suzanne and Kevin will follow via plane on Tuesday.  The long drive is for a couple of reasons; rental cars are very expensive in Florida….Suzanne and Kevin could work more (that didn’t work out for Kevin, but, ok).  Van is packed to the brim; hindsight says we should have had more of Christmas at home instead of carting gifts south.  Oh well.

But, the driving part works out since I can stop in Atlanta and see Melanie and bring her the few items she asked for; the coffee grinder, a small glass boot, and Dad’s Army Jacket.  There was more in the box, but, those three were the highlights so to speak.

The drive was uneventful; I guess the most interesting part was that Google Maps had suggested taking the back roads through Tennessee to Alpharetta instead of I-75.  Melanie and Jennifer had never heard of this, but, it was much shorter and by the time I hit Cleveland TN I was more than happy to get off the interstate for awhile.  Was a good move; very pretty drive and made really good time.

New Picture (7)

Arrived about 6 pm.  Was a quiet night but a good night; boys enjoyed the menagerie of dogs and cats and we watched football and Penn State volleyball before calling it a night.

(still fascinated by the police SUV….)

Sunday the boys and I headed to the Georgia Aquarium….before returning to Alpharetta for the Steeler game.  A good time had by all at the Aquarium….topped off by revealing to Cpher that Mom had arranged for a Christmas surprise for him (and us)…..an up-close encounter with the sea otters!

(one more of them in front of the tropical fish)

After lunch at the Varsity (what’ll ya have!) we drove back north to watch the Steelers dispatch the Chiefs

(Steeler Photo.  Matthew I guess should have been wearing his Seattle jersey(?))

After dinner we headed out to Main Event…..Dave & Busters but with laser tab, bowling, ropes course, etc.  Didn’t understand the whole pricing structure and spent way more here than I wanted to, but, it was a fun night out.

2014-12-MatthewBowlingWin

(watching Matthew bowl is fun; like most athletic things he is a natural at it.  And for the first time ever he whupped my ass at it.  Only Matthew and I bowled without bumpers….the rest of the scores are rebound-aided!)

Continued our journey south at 6 am Monday morning…wanted to (and did) beat the traffic through Atlanta.

JWH – Post Three: Voter Registration Cards

The most shocking discovery in JWH’s collection of things was his voter registration cards.

JWH - VotingCards

When I found the first card that listed Dad as voting Democrat it certainly gave me a pause; certainly Dad has railed against Obama and his ways often enough in our limited conversations on this topic and if I had to think of one person who might be a Tea Party stalwart it would be JWH.

So, I wrote it off as an accident of registration, a humorous one, but an accident nonetheless.

Turned out maybe it isn’t such an accident.  Or, he didn’t bother to correct the accident for a long time. Which seems very strange…

Or….

He was a closet Clinton Democrat!

Now that’s a truly crazy concept to consider!

JWH – Post Two

There aren’t many photos of Dad post-1987…..I have a few from when he came up to visit once or twice but that has to be about it.  Certainly didn’t see anything in Penn Hills that made me think otherwise.

But, there are the drivers license photos.  And Dad, I’ve come to realize, kept everything.  So here are the last three photos taken for that.

Blazer Update:  The Check Engine Light?  Just for some small emissions leak….nothing worth worrying about at all.

2001 Chevy Blazer

Much like the house, I was dreading the inside of the car as well.  Unlike the house, the car met everyone of my expectations.  It was dirty, smoky, and nasty.  Efforts to get it detailed before the drive home were unsuccessful.

IMG_4475

There is one good thing…the car has no mileage on it, only 50K.  That’s half of our two cars!  But I had a hell of a time getting it started for the first time….it had only sat for 5 days!  Finally coughed and spit to life….I let it run and run as Operation Cleanout began. Told Kevin we would be taking this beast out on the Parkway to convince myself it would make the trip back to Michigan in one piece.

One of the funnier Dad observations was watching him put on and take off THE CLUB from the steering wheel at every meeting…..he was certainly concerned that someone might take this ride and I can’t imagine anyone wanting this car!  So, after getting it started, I remove the club (for the last time).  Also remove the seat covers he had placed on both front seats…..nasty nasty nasty.

The car is only 2-doors, and, the more I’ve thought about it, is about perfect for two teenage boys who soon will be driving.  I don’t think he has had those back seats in an upright position in years….in fact, I’d bet money that nobody but Dad has ever sat in this car.   US Army sticker on the side; Marine ribbon and US Army sticker on the back.  4 pins placed above the temperature readout in the center of the car; alternating Army shields and US flags.  Access to the back is a pain in the ass; swing the spare tire out of the way, pop the window, then lower the gate.

IMG_4478

We get the car out on the Parkway and I floor it…..turns out 20 minutes of freeway driving is just what this thing needed!  Got some amusement on the drive to Warren from Pittsburgh Wednesday night from watching bits of leaves and other debris come out of the grill as the winds and shaking on the Turnpike grabbed them and shook them loose.  After sitting for 2 plus weeks over Christmas and with the temperature rocking about 10 degrees when we got home, the Blazer started right up.

One troubling note….the check engine light is on. This astonishes me…..I found Dad’s folder of Blazer records and he always has taken this thing to the dealership!  Last visit was in July….what could be the problem now?  Doesn’t seem to be a problem as I’ve been driving around but I need to go by an auto store and figure out what the message means.

Will need to invest in a new stereo….one of the speakers is blown out (Dad jamming to Marc Cohn….that was one of the CD’s in the car) and if myself and the boys are going to become primary drivers having something that has satellite radio and a port for the Iphone is a must.

Oh yeah, there is some body damage on the driver-side door….need to get an estimate on that as well.  Door doesn’t seal properly now….more road noise and the legs get a little chilly during the drive.

2343 School Street – Day Two

Kevin and I returned on Wednesday morning to finish up and meet up with some of the estate cleanup people I had called while driving down on Monday.  A nice bonus of having Kevin drive; I got to call and arrange all this on Tuesday morning.

There’s three of them; not much point in talking about the specifics BUT the spread in their estimates was noteworthy.  The lowest was $400, the highest was $1700.  I have no belief anything in the house can be resold for any value BUT they are certainly welcome to try.  Will do that cleanout the next time I’m there.  Will have to hire someone else (or do it myself) to rip out the kitchen and all of the carpeting.  At a minimum.

Met the neighbor just next to the house this morning; I understood from the first neighbor that this woman had checked on Dad about a year ago when he didn’t come out of the house for a couple of days and the papers started to back up.  She is black; the first neighbor had said that Dad was not very nice to her (his racist ways seemed to be very prominent in the retelling) when she knocked on the door that one time.  She seemed very nice as I talked with her….and I apologized for whatever the hell he did back then.

Spent a lot of time on the phone cancelling subscriptions (he had paid AARP through 2018.  That’s optimism!) and services.  Only Comcast was difficult….they want a copy of the death certificate.  Everyone else handled it in a pretty straightforward fashion (except maybe Pittsburgh magazine, who seemed flabbergasted that I would ask for a refund on the unused balance).

Drove down to downtown Pittsburgh because we thought I needed to probate the will.  The probate clerk advised me not to do that; since the only assets not in both of our names are the car and house it should be pretty straight-forward.  The title and registration can be handled by a notary….and if I sell the house I can do a abbreviated version of a probate with that.

Various things about the house I should mention that I haven’t already.

1)  Dad had a flagpole installed outside the front door….took the flag down and added that to things that will come home with me.

2)  One of the last things I did, and I wish it I had made it one of the first things, was checked the bathroom cabinets.  Of course there’s some Old Spice.  Bring it upstairs to show to Kevin and explain to him how I’ve never even thought of using this aftershave because, well, that’s the smell of Dad.  Spill some on the floor so he can smell it….should have done that almost as soon as we got there instead of putting up with the stale cigarette smoke smell that is going on.

3)  Found the user manual for the thermostat; turn everything down to 60 degrees. I didn’t turn the water off and in hindsight, I should have.  Will do that on the next trip.

4)  The car.   I think I’ll make that a post of its own…..

JWH – Post One

We will see how many of these posts I end up making…..

Far and away the most interesting piece of paper that I’ve found in my Dad’s files is this one.  I’m not even sure what it is/was for; a security check I guess?  But it does layout Dad’s early history from age 15 until Age 25.  Might have to drive by some of these places the next time I’m out in West Michigan.

JWH - Agency Check Request 1

JWH - Agency Check Request 2

2343 School Street – Day One

For many years I’ve known that my next visit to Dad’s house would be the one after he had passed away.  Acquired in 1997.  I had only been in the house once; shortly after he had purchased it.  The house is small; a main floor that has a kitchen and a living room, stairs that go down to a bathroom in the basement and stairs that go up to a bedroom.  That’s it.

By mutual unspoken accord any visit to Pittsburgh since my first visit to the house was arranged at a neutral site.  I think Dad knew that the family wasn’t going to work out in that space and I knew from the one visit that it would never be clean enough that I’d willingly bring anybody in there.

One of the big discussion points on Monday night and Tuesday morning as Kevin and I drove down to Pittsburgh was what would be awaiting us there.  I’m fearing the worst….I am sure it won’t be very clean but with the knowledge that he was probably dead for several days before being discovered I’m worried that there will be a nasty odor and mess on top of everything else.  Spend $50 on cleaning supplies at Meijer Monday night before Kevin and I head southeast in the morning.  I’m probably jaded by the maggot—nastiness of JWH Jr’s demise back in the 80’s……but this isn’t a trailer in the Tucson sun.

Kevin says Tuesday afternoon that it isn’t as bad as he thought it might be.  I agree on some parts.

Monday afternoon the medical examiner called; they had examined the body and report that he died of natural causes (but I’m not going to get any answers on what of a myriad of things was the determining cause).  They had arranged for the funeral home to collect the body…and that was that.

We arrive around 11 am after a stop at the police station to get the key to the house (I had one, given to me long ago, but there is no way I could lay my hand on it now).  His car is parked on the street where I remember it would be.  We walk down the steps to the house and hesitantly open the door.  I’ll eternally thankful that we were not greeted with any funky-ass smell.  So, that is pleasant surprise #1.

Sadly, the house is even more dirty than I would have thought.  The kitchen…the counters and the sink…heck, I’m not sure how long they had gone without seeing any kind of effort to wipe things down.   Tell Kevin we’ll start here with trying to sort through things and work our way through the house.

Kitchen:  I start in on the paperwork on the dining room table and bookshelf while Kevin works on cleaning out the cabinets and stuff.  He interrupts me periodically with updates on what he has found (spices with purchase dates as far back as the 1980s) and other interesting facts.  I’m busy trying to sort through what is junk and what I might need to get Dad’s affairs in order.  One of the first orders of business was to try and figure out exactly when he passed away; the death certificate lists December 15th but it is obvious that it was earlier than that.  Looking at the newspapers he had opened up (but not read) the Post-Gazette on Thursday morning.  Friday’s paper, and all subsequent papers, were still in the plastic wrap.  So, sometime between the early morning on December 11th and December 12th.

A neighbor comes over and says hello as Kevin and I are unloading the cleaning stuff from the car; she had called the police once the papers started to pile up..  Said Dad was pretty regular in his routine; out the door at 8 am to Shop-N-Save, over to the Legion, back by noon.  I know from trying to get a hold of him that he was often asleep by 4 pm…..almost always awake by 4 am or 5 am.  She said he seemed to have a lot of trouble with the steps on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Pleasant Surprise #2 is the startling revelation that for as messy is this house is that Dad’s financial records are decidedly not messy.  He has everything filed away neatly, checkbook meticulously balanced, every pertinent record that I will need to lay my hands on are found in the first 10 minutes of being at the house.  Surprised to see he has a subscription to Entertainment Weekly.  Not surprised to see he has one to Playboy.

There will be a lot of JWH posts in the future with some of the stuff I found; old driver’s licenses, voting registration cards, etc.  The debris of the past.   Kevin’s still cleaning out the kitchen cabinets.  The stove seems to be in decent shape (and I think from conversations with Dad, the only appliance regularly used…my impression is that most meals were Stouffer’s frozen pizza).  The freezer is empty; the refrigerator has 10 cans of Old Milwaukee and some leftovers that Kevin and I didn’t bother to figure out.  Maybe next trip.  The microwave….well, Kevin’s description was that it looked like he had tried to cook a squirrel!

Living Room:  I’m not even sure Goodwill would take any of the household items in here; maybe the entertainment center, maybe the couch or the other chair he didn’t sit in.  That’s about it.  I had thought Dad had a nicer TV; it is easily 10 years old and I know has no value since it is not a flat screen.  He does have about 200 records; Kevin is uber-geeked about this discovery and starts planning a listening event with best-buddy Drew.  We grab the electronics (there is a record on the turntable…Commodore’s Greatest Hits.  Side 1 Track 1?  Brick House!  She’s mighty mighty!)   Everything I’m looking for is in the cabinet under the TV; US Army Medals, pictures, notebooks, etc.

Bathroom:  The washer and dryer look to be ok (note to self:  run them the next time I’m there to make sure) and the bathroom is a total disaster.

Bedroom:  A large sense of dread as I head upstairs….but Pleasant Surprise #3 is that it was almost hard to tell that the end had come here.  There’s a dresser here but no clothes are in it; just stacked on the floor everywhere.  Have to go through 5 or 6 pairs of jeans before I find his wallet and money clip.  Nothing more comes out of this room (I may take some pictures of the ancient clothing I found there though!)

We leave here after two or three hours to head over to Blawnox(!) to the funeral home.  We scarf down lunch in their parking lot, and head inside.  It is about as straight forward as it is going to get; nothing but the cremation.  They inform me that Dad is in cold storage in the basement but they won’t cremate him until the permit application for Allegheny County is complete (an aside, Pennsylvania has some screwy requirements for this situation!)  They ask a bunch of questions for the death certificate; the only one worth discussing here is the relatively new addition of ‘primary occupation’ to the form.  My first thought is computer technician; it is what he did in the Army and his twenty-plus years of work after the Army.  But I’m sitting there thinking that this doesn’t cover it; a computer technician describes some Geek Squad schmoe who fixes sound cards and various Windows related problems.  Dad repaired computer boards when nobody else did that (part of the reason he stayed working so long with his various lifestyle problems was the there was literally nobody else that the company could hire to do what he did…and they needed that skill).

Ended up going with Computer Systems Operator.

Kevin and I head back to the hotel; he sleeps while I look through the bin of documents I have collected.  We’ll hit some of that in the next post.

I’m out running errands on Monday the 15h; I’m inside Meijer getting a few groceries, and Meijer is a black hole of cell coverage.  I’m not in there long, but, when I walk out, I see I have a call and a voice mail from a 412 area code number.  This is ominous; about a month previous I had received a call from a strange 724 area code number…turns out it was a friend who had just moved to Pittsburgh from Michigan and I told him that “strange calls from Pittsburgh area codes probably mean bad news”.

And so it was….

New Picture (3)

As near as I can figure they had my number because I had to call and ask them to do the same kind of welfare check on him about a year back; he wouldn’t answer the phone or return messages after repeated calls.  They went over and his car wasn’t there and that was that)  I call back almost immediately (I must has missed it by a minute) but the officer is no longer at his house and so, after giving them approval to break into the house, I have to wait for them to go back over and actually do it.

Text Suzanne - “On phone with Allegheny police.  Might be bad news about my Dad”

Finally think to call him.  “IF ITS IM-PO-TANT; LEAVE A MESSAGE!”.   Tell him to pick up the damn phone, the police are coming to break his door down.  Pretty sure I’m talking to just air at this point…….

So, I finish my errands (just the Post Office left and then home).  Talk with Suzanne…..although I don’t know anything more at this point.  Decide to swing by the PNC branch just down the road and for only the second time I ask them to print out his account balance (did it once to confirm I could do it many years ago).  They do, there is nothing strange there.  Get home; tell Kevin what is going on.  Clean up a little, call a guy about a job and as I’m finishing that call the next call comes through and I have to hang up in a hurry.  And yup, they found that he passed away in his sleep.  Officer asks if he has a doctor; I laugh.

And that afternoon becomes a whirlwind of activity before we have to leave for the boys basketball games.  Call Suzanne.  Call Melanie.  Call Mom.  Tell Kevin that we will be heading to Pittsburgh Tuesday morning (missing a concert I had gotten him tickets to for his birthday on Tuesday night).  The officer gives me a name of a funeral home; I call them, since I am interested in only cremation they refer me to another funeral home that has a crematorium on site.  Make multiple calls to see if I can get Dad’s car detailed before we drive back; no luck there.

Begin to do a whole lot of internet research on how to deal with his estate.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Last time I saw him:  Sunday morning, July 27th.  Kevin and I were heading to Boston for orientation….we had breakfast with him at Eat N Park before we left town.

Last time I talked to him:  Thanksgiving morning.  We had been playing phone tag before that; the last voice mail message I had from him is below.

 New Picture (4)

A little more substance in the only other message I still had; when I saw him in July we had talked about Matthew’s upcoming (but now cancelled) trip to Europe.  He had offered to help with Matthew’s fundraising efforts……

New Picture (5)

Not many people to call after I had the news; did send an email to my half-sister.  Tried to reach his sister; left two messages at what I think is the right number; no response.  Probably should call down to Tipp City Ohio…haven’t done that yet.

New Picture (6)

From The Sports Desk – Basketball Week Five and Six

The last three games of the season; all rematches of the first three games.  This time, I get to see the other boy against these opponents.

Cpher:  Lost to Parkside, lost to Holt, beat East Lansing.  Same results as the first games, but, I saw the first and the last.  Not much more to say here.

New Picture (1)

Lost 56-23 to Parkside.  The shortest highlight clip I’ve done this year.  Cpher had 4 points.

Let me see…what did Suzanne say about the Holt game?  “Not getting any extra time so far.”  The coach had told Cpher that he knew he had been slighted and promised some extra time in some of these games…..never came through with it.  “2 points for Cpher”.  “Crazy…pulled out with not even 3 minutes of playing time.  Whole team pulled”.  “Losing 17-12 halfway through 2”.  “Down 23-17 at half”.  “So hate this playing time stuff.  No time in first and not looking like any time in 3rd.”  “Back in with 90 seconds”.  “Losing 32-21 after 3”.  “Pulled out in 4th.  We’ll see if he comes back in.  Right no only 3 minutes total in 2nd half.”  “Back in…made a nice basket.”  “44-28 final.”

New Picture (2)

Beat East Lansing 56-44.  Cpher again had 4 points; like these two points the best….he is boxing out his shorter opponent and goes back up with the rebound. Also had one nice block I caught in the highlights as well.

Matthew:  For the first time, ever, the 7th grade teams both finished the season undefeated.  A pretty good season for that group of boys.  Beat the same three teams Cpher played pretty soundly.  Only saw the Holt game.

Beat Holt….hmmm, I didn’t do a highlight clip for this game.  Probably because I left for Pittsburgh early the next morning.   :(   Will try and do that in the next week.

From The Sports Desk – Orange Crush Week 4

Game 7:  We play the Okemos U14 CASL team….once upon a time I used to coach this team but all these years later there are no kids on the team that I coached.  They are all classmates of Cpher though.  We offered him the chance to play but he pretty firmly said ‘no’.

They were much better than I would have thought…..their goalie made a lot of nice saves and we looked downright disinterested in even playing the game.  Won 3-1, but it was not pretty.  I thought Matthew played well….he was one of the few kids who actually seemed to want to be out there.  Really disappointed in how a lot of the boys approached this game; can’t believe I had to chide them at halftime for lack of effort.

Some good examples of Matthew’s nifty footwork in the highlights; I especially like the kids behind the goal ‘oooh-ing’ after his one move before the first goal.

New Picture (28)

Game 8:  The third game against Corn.  We win, we win the division.  This game is different though….ODP training is at the same time so we are missing three of our starters and they are missing one, but, it is a big one, the goal scorer is gone.  Find out as we get to the game we will be missing our goalie too, so, we will only have one sub.  Had Christopher bring clothes along just in case we needed him!

I thought, before the game, that it would be pretty even but we had the advantage even with all of our kids missing.  Turns out we won going away, 9-3.  Challenged Henry before the game; “we need goals” and I knew I was probably going to be keeping Matthew and Cole, the other two kids I can count on for goals, in the back most of the game.  He took my challenge to heart; he had 6!

Not Matthew’s finest game…..he did some stupid things that had me yank him from the field and park him in goal for a while.  Simply put, he wasn’t playing the quick, simple soccer we keep talking about; he lingered on the ball too much and it led directly to turnovers that ended up in on our net.

New Picture (29)

From The Sports Desk – Basketball Week Four

The last week of the season where we play new teams; Fowlerville and Haslett

Cpher:  Away for Fowlerville.  We win 59-18 in a blowout where another Dad and I were actively speculating on if we would hit 60 (we could have but there was a big scoring drought in the third).  Cpher scored 4 points but had some great defense as well.

 New Picture (30)

They beat Haslett 56-48 on Wednesday.  No points, no fouls, and didn’t play very much since the coach definitely doesn’t think much of Christopher and plays to win…so Christopher sits the bench for most of the second half.  Just very frustrating since we have to pay so much ($260) for him to participate in these sports and it is the freakin’ B team…why wouldn’t you try to equalize the playing time?!?

Matthew:  If there is one thing that is apparent by now it is that the 7th grade basketball ‘pool’ is very deep in Okemos.  Our ‘A’ team is undefeated and pretty much dominating every team they play.  Our ‘B’ team is undefeated and it is the same story….I would bet our B team would beat a lot of these A teams…

Anyway, this week was full of very sad and frustrating experiences for the other team.  I was there for the second and will attest, our coach made it clear to the boys to stop pressing after a quarter, to stop taking the fast breaks, and to pass a certain number of times before attempting shots in the second half.

And still, with all of that, we beat Fowlerville 46-3 and beat Haslett 53-3.  The Haslett game was 47-0 at the end of the third.  Matthew could stand to be a little more selfish in some of these games; he might as well get his points since the other teammates won’t pass it to him as they score.  Suzanne commented several times during the Fowlerville game that he gave up the ball on open chances to give his teammates better looks……

Haslett highlights below:

New Picture (31)

From The Sports Desk – Orange Crush Week 3 Edition

Game 4:  Beat a team of Holt freshman 9-2.  As I type this, I have absolutely no idea what happened in this game other than that we killed them.  Let me watch the highlights.

Oh yeah….Henry and buddy Sam provided some intriguing color commentary…Matthew had two of the first three goals, had two assists, and had a nice save on his turn at goal when he was left out to dry by the defense but the rebound dribbled in.   And the Holt goalie did a really good job to just keep that game at 9-2.

Video below.

 New Picture (26)

Game 5:  The facility has switched the schedule around a little bit; we now play Corn FC two more times.  Good for us, because we don’t have to hold back during games as we blast our opponents.

I was surprised to hear the Mom of one of Corn’s players (their best kid, the one who scored six goals against us) lament the change in schedule change; she apparently wants to watch them destroy these teams 14-1 or whatever it is.  (insert sound of big heavy sigh here)

So anyway, this is the big rematch; the third game will be different for reasons I’ll go into later.  First time out we rotated everyone on defense; this time I’m only playing the kids I think can stand up to the big forward….and it goes better, he only scored 3, and one of those was a funny deflection.

But we are losing 4-2 at the half; score the next four to make it 6-4 us; give up two more and then with 20 seconds left get the game winner, 7-6 us.  No Matthew goals…he was busy on defense (and did fairly well….did get beat badly once and was helpless on a 3 on 2 that the other team executed perfectly (passed the ball to Matthew’s guy when he was forced to come over and help on the extra guy).

Again, video below.

New Picture (27)

From The Sports Desk – Basketball Week Three

Only one game this week, so, this should be quick!

Cpher:  The team won 52-35 against Williamston; Suzanne missed the first quarter and there wasn’t a whole lot to report on the Christopher front the rest of the way.  Didn’t play at all in the 2nd quarter.  Made a shot in the third; missed a couple of shots in the fourth.

Matthew:  He was away, so, I got this game.  They won 50-24.  He missed all of his attempts; got called for charging, and was in a nasty collision with one of his teammates that seemed to result in Tyler having a dislocated jaw.  Not his best day!  :)

Video highlights from Matthew’s game below:

New Picture (25)

(The Charge:  A nice move to get to the basket but he was really obvious about it and you can see the guy already setting his legs waiting for Matthew to blast into him)

Google+ Year In Review

They made the video out of photos that….well, I’m not sure where they got the pictures.  I thought it was from photos I posted on the blog but that doesn’t really explain why they only seem to cover up until May 1.  So who knows?

Anyway, click on the photo for the minute of video:

Kevin’s first performance with the Northeastern University Symphony Orchestra is, again(!), a piece of music Dad loves.  Actually toyed with the idea of flying out for the concert.

Didn’t do that, but, they have a professional-grade recording made of it (listened to it with Kevin, he was saying “You can hear the violas!”).  Click on the links below to listen to each movement (you have to download the file but your browser should prompt you to play it automatically)
