No pictures here, so, it’s a little easier to do in the small break we have this morning. We’re going to walk up to the museum, wandering through Central Park and some of the neighborhoods, and meet up with Lloyd and Amy today.
Billy Elliott: Went to this Wednesday night; Suzanne’s been wanting to see this for a long long long time. Our seats were great…three rows back on the aisle and at one point Suzanne could have reached out and grabbed Billy in a bear hug.
I was a bit ambivalent going in, wasn’t sure how much I would like a musical about boys and ballet but ended up liking it a lot. It was funny, the singing and dancing were excellent, and surprising to me was the amount of male-chorus-ensemble pieces, and that’s always a big plus from my point of view.
After the show we went to the 24hr/365day-a-year Apple Store to return and exchange my new Iphone (….a story for another post…). Got there at 11:45 and left at 12:30 am!
Daily Show with Jon Stewart: Rather late in the vacation planning we had the idea of seeing the taping of a TV show. We were still 2 months away from actually being here, but, most shows didn’t have tickets available (Suzanne wanted to see the View….they website made it very clear that if you didn’t ask 12 months prior you were out of luck). But, there were still tickets (free!) for the Daily Show, so, we sent in our request and got them.
Last Thursday night the guests were Adam Sandler and Chris Rock. We hoped we would be as lucky. Wednesday night, while we were at Billy Elliott, Landon Donovan was there. Our guest on Thursday….some dude who was lucky enough to be captured by the Taliban for 45 days. Oh well.
But the first two segments were very good and funny, and it was neat to see them make a TV show (I was shocked they did it all in one take….no stops for edits or redo’s, just segment, break, segment, break, segment, end).
The only down side was the wait…they asked us to be there between 3:30 and 4:30…we arrived at 3:30 and were some of the last ones there…..and then had to wait until 5:20 to go inside. Oh well, free is free.
You can see the show here. The first two segments are worthwhile, I’d skip segment 3.
Promises, Promises: Made the last minute decision Thursday to go see this show….realized, belatedly, that we would have time after the Daily Show to see a musical, and, we were really psyched to see a show that had Sean Hayes and Kristin Chenowith as the leads. Had the thought to try and get half price tickets, but, we would have had to get in line a heck of a lot earlier than the 3 pm when we decided “what the heck, let’s go!”.
So, purchased the tickets online and made it over to the theatre with plenty of time to spare after the Daily Show.
The show was great; it’s a remake of a 60’s musical and they didn’t update it so all of the clothes, sets, etc are in that style. For a show that was listed as a comedy, I didn’t laugh as much here as I did at Billy Elliot, but, man, the main attraction was the leads and they were great. The musical numbers here were simply spectacular!
Coming Attractions: What I might blog about soon…
- Vacation Day 2 – Our trip to Chelsea and the High Line Park.
- The saga of the broken Iphone
- A Fric and Frac update
- Confrontations – My early nominee for post of the year…I’ve had the opportunity to chide/inform some parents about the behavior of their children recently and those events have been noteworthy. Wasn’t going to talk about the first one, but, man, the second one yesterday was a classic! Suzanne went from slightly embarrassed that I even said something to unbelieving at the parent’s (or grandparent’s) response to the situation. So, I’ll take the time to write those suckers down soon…..
