Game Report – Jr. State Cup Game 1

The game report from Sunday’s 2-0 win.  He changed the format a little bit from the fall; hopefully this new format is more blog-printing-friendly.

GAME ANALYSIS

DATE:  04/19/2014

TEAM: 02 Boys Blue VS Birmingham United

RESULT: 2-0 Win (Home)

ATTACKING STRENGTHS:

  • Excellent entry passes from midfield third to attacking third to find the strikers and wide players in space.
  • A good amount of mobility from forward players to unbalance the opposition.
  • For a few periods of the game we showed good build up play from the back using good rhythm and tempo.
  • Full backs offered good width and constantly helped us start the attacks.

ATTACKING CHALLENGES

  • Lacked quality link up play with the striker and midfield, as our support underneath wasn’t sharp enough.
  • Strayed offside too many times. Some calls were questionable however we need to (especially with our speed) give ourselves an extra yard.
  • Wasted good goal scoring opportunities due to a lack of decision-making and composure in front of goal.

DEFENDING STRENGTHS

  • We denied the opposition time and space with the ball quickly.
  • For the most part we dealt with the ball over the top well and our line of confrontation was good.
  • Our individual tackling techniques were very good, and the decision of when to poke, block, or jockey the opposition was good.

DEFENDING CHALLENGES

  • Occasionally players got a little complacent with their concentration and got caught our of position.
  • They had two very good chances and this was due to a lack of concentration on our behalf.
  • Must read the visual cues of the opposition a little better and realize when they are likely to hit the longer ball vs the shorter ball.

OVERALL COMMENTS

  • The boys actually played very well during periods of the game especially the opening and finally 5 – 10 minutes. We created enough opportunities to score more and need to be a little more ruthless in the final third. Our movement off the ball was good but we under and over hit too many balls into the midfield and our attacks would be short lived. The final ten minutes of the game when we just kept the ball and moved it quickly was how we should have been looking to break down the opposition all day.
  • We did show some very encouraging signs in our attacking play at moment that we can build on. With the squad being the size it is now I feel we will be able to get the best out of the boys in training and create more competition for places which will help us better reach our goals this season! Overall a pleasing first game to the season.
