The Big Northeastern Drop-Off

And so the day, a day like any other, but, different than any other, arrived.  Of course, it’s the hottest day of the summer in Boston.

At least there is one positive of drop-off….the van, which has been crammed to the brim full of stuff (even more so after our arrival in Boston and a trip to Target and Costco) will be not-so-full.

We are directed to arrive between noon and for Kevin’s drop-off.  You stage at a parking lot, and then are directed in to the dorm.  The staging was nothing….nobody was there, we just drove through and were checked off the list and then drove to the drop-off point (should have gotten a picture of this but was busy with, well, driving).  They have a bunch of volunteers there with big bins (basically heavy-duty cardboxes on wheels) and they systematically grab everything out of the trunk and into two bins and off Kevin and the family goes….I have to take the car to the parking garage.

When I get back Mom and Kevin are in full unpacking mode….Kevin’s roommate, Scotty, has already been here, unpacked, and left (much to Suzanne’s annoyance….but I think I understood they flew in and flew out…the parents were long gone by the time we met Scotty for the first time after lunch).   So Scotty has what might be called the better side of the room; he has more space.  We get Kevin’s bed adjusted upwards; mattress topper unfurled, food unpacked, clothes put where Mom wants them and head downstairs for lunch.

Lunch is in the same International Village cafeteria I had a picture of earlier….it is free for the family but Kevin gets debited one meal.  His meal plan is 10 meals a week.  The standard plan is 15….a lot of discussion of Kevin’s eating habits made it clear that 10 would be enough (and, to date, it has been)….he rarely eats breakfast (this has changed since has been at college though, now maybe 2 of 7 days he goes down) and is more prone to lightly snack on mac and cheese cups or a hot dog than have a formal meal.

Fric and Frac are impressed by the array of choices at the cafeteria….

Not much else to be done here, so, we say our goodbyes and head over to the bookstore (where we spend more on Northeastern gear than Kevin did on textbooks!).  Not a lot of drama in the goodbyes…we will almost certainly see him Saturday night for dinner before we leave for home.
