The end of the road

This tree….

2009-06-MatthewTree

the lovely maple tree in our front yard fell on hard times last summer (after this picture…).  The leaves all went brown, never really fell off, and this year, no leafs at all.  You can drive down our street and see the line of maple trees at houses that are no longer there as some sort of disease has marched in and very quickly and effectively killed them off.

This great tree has shielded our home from the sun, provided shade for dogs, a climbing post for cats, and a challenge for young boys for over a decade.  But, it’s dead, and an eyesore now.  I had resolved to keep it so the boys could climb it this spring and summer, but they haven’t been up it once.

So, I came home the other day and noticed a tree service in the area doing some yard work for the guy across the street.  Carpe Diem’ed it, and the tree met it’s end in a blizzard of chainsaws and wood chips.

Near the end…

These guys wasted no time…climbed up to the lower branch and chopped off the major branches which they carted off to the shredder in the background

Tree no more.  A sad day.
