I think it will be hard for a post on this blog not to be sports-related over the next two months.
Saturday: Thunderstorms rolled through mid-Michigan all day long and they played havoc with the sports schedule. Christopher’s 9 am start against Grand Ledge was delayed for about an hour as the first wave of lightning and thunder moved in.
When they did start, they made the decision to play using a running clock; no stoppages for incomplete pass, out of bounds, nothing. The game went kind of wacky from that point on and the final (GL 6, Okemos 0) reflected nothing more than a wacky game without any continuity.
Christopher played well (I think)….almost exclusively as left tackle. Started the game on the front of the kickoff return team and had the ball kicked directly to him! Thankfully, he grabbed it and fell on it, and the game went on. He did a good job of blocking but did not do such a great job of noticing the guy that would line up a few feet outside of him and rush by him while he blocked the guy in front of him. The coaches did finally help clue him in to this (after picking our QB and RB up off the ground once or twice) and after that he either came out and got him, or, one time, took the guy in front of him and blocked him into that guy out there.
Coaches have mentioned Cpher would be a better player if he paid more attention in practice (at one point he was in the game when he shouldn’t have been….it was clearly his fault). Need to work on this.
Matthew’s first TNT game of the weekend started at 12:30 pm; the team won 7-0 (I think). Matthew had a goal that I have some crappy video of; I don’t think I’m going to save it (Dad was too busy watching, not doing enough moving of the camera to follow the ball and game). We overmatched this team quite easily and Matthew spent the second half in goal, booming goal kicks and punts out of his end.
I hope (I hope) that his falling down while kicking problem has reached its zenith here…he fell down at least 8 times in the first half and we had a long talk about it after the game. I think he understands that he’s shifting his weight back instead of forward and that’s what is forcing him onto his butt all of the time.
The OSC soccer game started at the same time as the arrival of the 2nd round of tstorms…game called off and will be rescheduled.
Sunday: Another early morning (no sleeping in for Dad this weekend!)….Matthew and Dad head down to Livonia for the 2nd TNT game of the weekend….against the same team we played on Saturday. Same result, an 8-0 blowout, but, all the kids on our team have scored a goal this season now. Matthew played defense in the first half and had a sweet(!) goal where he carried the ball forward and blasted the ball in from at least 35+ feet out.
Only fell down once this game from having his weight wrong….and looked over at me with a “I’m sorry” look on his face.
Watched the first ten minutes of the Steelers game (which was eventful enough to tide me over for a while!) and then headed off with the boys to the OSC game that started at 2 pm. We beat Haslett 3-0….almost all of the game was played in the Haslett end of the field and we missed on a lot (lot!) of opportunities. I did move Christopher up out of defense for the last six minutes of the game and he punched in the third goal to close out the scoring. Happy for the big guy that he got a goal…he doesn’t get many chances.
This week: Kevin has tennis meets Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday….and a JV invitational on Saturday in Holt. Christopher had a football game Saturday in Holt and an OSC game Wednesday. Matthew has that same OSC game Wednesday and TNT games this coming weekend, 2 on Saturday and 1 on Sunday.
Whew!!!!
