Up Up and Away

Saturday’s events were a four-part blog event.

One:  The hotel offered free tennis clinics in the morning; Fric and Frac got an hour lesson at 9 am and Kevin got a lesson at 10.

I played Kevin while Fric and Frac went through the paces (he beat me 6-2….he has to serve to me all the time to work on his serve).  When the boys were done spreading balls all over the courts we left and gave Kevin his turn alone with the coach.

Asked Kevin at the end if he felt like he got a lot out of the 90 minute session and his answer was a very enthusiastic ‘yes’…I think just being on the team has made Kevin much more serious about the lessons he get.  He told us that she completely reworked his serve and gave him some good advice on how to keep it that way and deliver more power….we’ll see how it looks when we play later this week.

Two:  Went to Corvette’s Diner for lunch….the quote of the day occurred on the trip here as we passed the Marine Corp recruiting intake center.  Pointed it out to Matthew; said he could go there when he was older, and Matthew pipes up “Mom, you don’t have to be older, you just have to be brave and strong!”

This game ended badly for Kevin….I beat him pretty good here.  Had just beaten him at air hockey as well.  He mentioned playing Galaga against me at first, told him he didn’t even want to go there…..

Wait.  I’m messed up here. Corvette’s was Friday’s lunch.  Saturday’s lunch was walking around the shops on Coronado.  Oops.

Three:  Decided, at lunch, to call and see if the Torrey Pines Gliderport was open….last trip out here we tried and tried to get Kevin a trip there for tandem paragliding and the weather conditions weren’t cooperating.  This time, they were open and we decided to go for it.  Kevin and I drove out there while Mom and the boys rented some bikes to ride around Coronado.

Got there, signed a legal document that was crazy long, and waited….and waited…and waited.  Turns out that this was the first good flying day in 2 weeks and everyone (EVERYONE!) was out trying to get in the air.  Day grows long…the trips are slowly petering out…we hear that one pair had to land on the beach and hike back, and we wonder if Kevin is going to ever get in the air.  Walk back to the office to ask what’s up and the lead instructor/pilot is in the background as we’re talking to the guy who’s explaining that the winds have shifted a little bit and they are reevaluating the situation.  Instructor guy comes up, looks at the list of people waiting to go up (three at this point), looks at Kevin, says “you’re the lightest of these three…let’s go!”

Video is here (okay, it’s not here yet…it will be once the file finishes uploading overnight!).

Paid the extra $15 for the pictures their photographer took; I will upload those soon and stick them up here as well

Kevin had an absolute blast…they did more aerobatics than the other groups we saw…I guess because Kevin was up for doing them.

Four:  Returned to the hotel; played by the pool.  This included trying to prove to Kevin that I was the man at ping-pong (failed; he beat me 21-19…too much practice at Blue Lake and in Europe) and at Chess (much like Ms. Pac-Man, he had no chance here).

Didn’t mention that Kevin did not fair well in the game of checkers he played with life-size pieces with Christopher at Horton plaza…Christopher was more than holding his own against his big brother.

pondering his doom…..

Dinner was pizza (a giant pizza!) on Coronado and a quiet night on Coronado afterwards….
