“The Blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus) is a marine mammal… At over 108 ft in length and 200 tons or more in weight, it is the largest animal ever known to have existed”
Wednesday morning we head down to Dana Point to take Captain Dave’s Dolphin Safari cruise; the marine layer is ‘in’ as we head down the coast…it’s very foggy and we’re not even sure if we’re going to head out.
But, we go. Seems very likely we’ll see dolphins, but, warn the boys that it’s not guaranteed. Happily, as we head out, almost immediately we run into a large pod of dolphins and spend about 10 to 15 minutes in and around the pod, watching them fish and watching them play with the boat (we’re in a catamaran, so, the dolphins can ride between the two bows)….
My dolphin video is posted; I have no pictures…Suzanne was taking those and I’ll get a link to her photos over here once she uploads everything to Shutterfly.
Suzanne’s up at the front with me and the boys; the dolphins are jumping; there are babies, really small babies, swimming along, it’s really cool.
And someone sees a whale. Bye dolphins, we’re off to bigger things!
My blue whale video is posted; again, no pictures. There were two of them and they were really in tight to the coast (so, everytime you hear someone on the tape say “oh, the tail!” you can think what I was thinking “idiot, the tail is for deep dives”).
You can see the marine layer and fog burning off as the blue whale video continues; by the time we had to head back in it was bright and sunny.
