From The Sports Desk – Basketball Begins

Side note 1:  Christopher has begun wrestling practice but may be dropping it after a week due to academics…..we will revisit this on Monday.

Side note 2:  Blazer has a small gas leak (no matter how few miles the car has it has been outside for 15 winters); we will see how that goes at the mechanic this week.  Have found a nice solution to my sadness over the am/fm/cd radio in the car; put a portable Bose speaker in the back and stream satellite radio or podcasts over the internet.

Basketball:  A double-header today; we will only be there for the first game before we have to fly out of there to get to soccer.

Looking at the schedule I’m thinking the first game is winnable but have my doubts about a lot of the other ones….we play Fowlerville’s ‘B’ team but Fowlerville at least has an ‘A’ team that is playing in the two Gold divisions.  The other communities (including some of the big ones like East Lansing) we are going up against their best team!  We will get hammered if that is actually the case…..

Game starts at 9 am; kids are asked to be there at 8:30.   By game start we have 7….the other three trot in at 9 am.  Sigh.

We are winning until the fourth quarter where a) our ice-cold shooting and inability to get inside catch up to us and b) Fowlerville goes to a 2-3 zone that we make no attempt to penetrate and we lose 28-23.  Matthew has 10 points; he was matched up against a kid on the inside that was four to five inches taller than him and he did a really good job of it….only really got caught out when he had to move over to help out and lost his position in doing so.  Offensively was a mixed bag….made two threes, including one from way out BUT I think no matter what he needs to try and get inside more.  He can’t be taking that many outside shots in a game.

The other takeaway?  These games are going to be hard to watch; his team can be a train wreck at times.  Watched one kid have six turnovers….in one quarter.  Watched other kids who just didn’t want to be there.  Sigh.

Soccer:  First game with a full squad with the new coach is against a team that, hopefully, we are playing this spring in P1.

I hope we play them because we handled them pretty easily; we won 3-1.  Could have scored more; we missed a PK and two other pretty open shots.  Gave up the one goal with 30 seconds to go.

Matthew played pretty well; started at attacking center mid and played there for most of the game….spent a few minutes at holding center mid late.  Had the assist on our first goal; he did just pass the ball to space BUT it was the space that only our guy could get to and he had to wrestle the ball away from the other kid to get it there.  Got his head on a corner kick but punched it over the goal.

(click on the picture for the video….this is where he fights his way through for possession and gets the ball forward for the assist.  Got there late so no GoPro stuff from the goal…..)
