JWH: The Wallet

Presented, without much commentary, are the pictures Dad kept in his wallet.  I’m sorely tempted to comment on the last set but will let that fade into history…

(ok, I’ll comment here.  They aren’t wallet pictures but I guess they fit here as well as anywhere.  He had saved these ticket stubs on his bulletin board.  We went to these events….his biggest takeaway from Michigan Stadium was the size (and length) of the urinals….talked about it for years.)

Penn State Sets Back Michigan With Defense and Special Effort

ANN ARBOR, Mich., Nov. 16— On an afternoon when Penn State's offense seemed unable to find its way into the end zone, the special teams provided a timely alternate route in a scruffy 29-17 victory over Michigan.

After the Nittany Lions stalled for the second time inside Michigan's 10-yard line, the special teams came to the rescue late in the third quarter with a blocked punt. The Wolverines were holding a 17-16 lead with 3 minutes 45 seconds left in the period when Penn State's freshman cornerback, David Macklin, swooped in on punter Paul Peristeris and snuffed the kick at the Wolverines' 5-yard line.

Ahmad Collins, a linebacker, scooped up the loose ball for a touchdown and a 22-17 Penn State lead that wholly changed the direction of the game. The 2-point conversion attempt failed, but not the relentless Penn State defense, which collected four second-half interceptions and a fumble recovery to leave the home crowd of 105,898 at Michigan Stadium in silent disbelief.

Wings hold Pens to one first-period shot

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Good teams find a way to win, even without all their key players. It's a lesson the Mario Lemieux-less Pittsburgh Penguins might want to learn from the Detroit Red Wings.

Brendan Shanahan and Boyd Devereaux scored in the second period and the Red Wings -- as hot after the Olympic break as they were before it -- won their sixth in a row, holding the Penguins to one shot in the first period of a 4-2 victory Saturday.

Dominik Hasek allowed Jan Hrdina's goal on the Penguins' second shot of the game early in the second period, but stopped 20 shots and made a series of key saves during a Pittsburgh power play early in the third period to preserve a one-goal lead

Aurilia has 3 RBI in victory

(AP) -- Joel Pineiro suddenly is an even bigger fan of interleague play than he was before.

Pineiro limited Pittsburgh to one run over eight innings in his second straight win, and Rich Aurilia drove in three runs to lead the Seattle Mariners past the Pirates 5-1 Saturday night.

Pineiro (3-8) looked a lot more like the pitcher who won 16 games last season than the one who recently ended a seven-game losing streak. He allowed only two harmless singles through seven innings until Jason Bay homered leading off eighth, his third in two games.
